I haven't been in either car, but from people who have they say the
LS1 is extremely refined. Still, I agree and I'd opt for the Cobra.
I would stay with the Mustang. With the extra power, the Cobra will
be just as fast, maybe even faster then the LS1 cars. Also, every GM
convertible car I have ever been in turns into a rattle trap after
some miles. I'm sure improvements have been made in this area, still
I'd opt for the Ford. Also, Cobra convertibles have kick-ass resale
value, much better then a convertible T/A. The '99 Cobras also have
an idependent rear, something that should help with bumps you will
encounter in mid-turn that would upset the T/A's chassis.
Chevy's "old pushrod" engine meets all emission requirements Ford's "advanced"
DOHC engine meets, without the weight adding, engine height increasing, engine
width increasing penalties a DOHC design brings with it. The pushrod design V8
results in a shorter, narrower, with a lower center of gravity engine than does a
DOHC design..
Now, which is more "advanced"? The Chevy pushrod V8 or Ford's DOHC?
Sincerely,
MarcW. (Who drives a Ford car with Ford's "advanced" SOHC which has all the
penalties of the DOHC, without the benefit of the HP. It's what's known as a lose
lose situation...)
Touche. You are right. My apologies. I was speaking on that topic without
the benefit of knowledge. Damn, I hate when I do that!

I'd say stick with the Cobra. You won't be disappointed. Back in my
glory days, I've converted many "GM men" To Ford men with a few
white-knuckle rides in my '88 GT. Eventually, 5.0s started popping up
everywhere in my town - many of them former GM guys.
Dave
I recently had an opportunity (yet another trip to the local Ford dealer's
service department for my '96 Mustang GT) to rent a Mustang convertible (I
specifically asked for this car for comparison reasons), V6, '97 model, in
order I might compare the Mustang's handling/ride to a Camaro convertible,
V6, '97 model, I had an opportunity to rent (from the same rental agency)
some months ago, and I was pleasantly surprised by the Mustang convertible's
better handling/ride and more solid feel.
Of course, not even the Mustang convertible was as solid as my daily driver's
(a '96 GT hardtop with over 40,000 miles on it) handling/ride/feel, but the
Mustang convertible was better than expected in this regard, and better than
the Camaro convertible.
My point is that, at least in my limited driving experience (less than 100
miles in each of the rental convertibles) over the same roads, in practically
the same driving conditions, both cars with about the same amount of mileage
-- around 5,000 miles -- a Mustang convertible exhibited better
handling/ride/more solid feel than a comparable Camaro convertible.
Whether this difference between the '97 Mustang V6 and the '97 Camaro V6,
also means the latest incarnations of the Mustang Cobra and the Pontiac Trans
Am will come out in the same order when compared thusly, I can't say.
Sincerely,
MarcW.

I still like that little bit of substance under the Cobra's hood. Yowee!

Then again, supposedly the '99 LS1 is slightly different from the '98
model, in particular the cast cylinder sleeves are thicker, allowing for a
larger re-bore.
Combine that with a stroker crank and you can say "454" too!!
Now, I'm not much on the factory WS6 hood (so I have a Raptor hood
instead), but you'll most likely be pleased with the other aspects of the
WS6 package like the improved suspension and 17" chrome wheels. Either
way, go with what YOU like, not what you think others like. (Except don't
get an automatic!!!!!)

Do you honestly believe anyone in this News Group will recommend the Trans
AM???
Tell you what... *If* you find a '99 Trans Am WS-6/7 that is available you
better buy it. This year I wanted a WS-6 Trans AM and was plain shit out'a
luck... So, I had to settle for a Formula. I understand that WS-6s are far
from a common sight on Pontiac lots.
I'm not biased toward any one car manufacturer but I am very impressed with
how well the LS-1 responds to a few simple cheap mods. After I did all the
mods listed on the http://www.ls1.com & a nice Borla system I must admit
the LS-1 is a kick ass motor that can bring sweat to the upper lip of many
Porsche owners. With the addition of the 383 stroker kit (next year for me)
550 HP will make this Formula a beast at the track.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder... try both cars and see what gives
you that warm fuzzy feeling!
I agree. I'd place a post over there in AACF too, just so you can get
the other side of the story. If you want the truth, ask the people who
own the cars.
Yep. We're all waiting for the info on the Cobras... you're not the
only one. I've heard that the info may actually come out on Tuesday.
If not, it'll definately be out in the next couple of weeks.

I hate to break the news but I'm just relaying what all the major car mags
have to say about your car: "13.6 in the 1/4 but buy the Stang anyway at
14.0." Necks break to look at a TA? It must be pretty lonesome out there
in sheepville. And as for the "true muscle car," I imagine you mean muscle
cars from teh '60s???? News flash: they were all shaped like boxes!!! Not
this Euro, 1970s disco shit GM is marketing. Could you stick MORE crap onto
that car????

Mustangs don't start at $13,000....No one is breaking there neck
looking at your car buddy, its a damn Trans Am, not a Viper GTS....
Mustangs do look a little like a box...from the rear.

I'd probably break my neck to look and see what kind of idiot didn't
spend the extra 3K to get the WS6... :)

But everyone and her sister is buying Mustangs. ;)
Wanna race? :)
They chose to build, and whore out the remaining '98's to clear the supply
chain. This is why the usual end-of-year hoopla is more strident than usual;
rebates, low financing, etc.
The spike in sales is a byproduct of this.

Why get the WS6? Its really no quicker etc....I think the WS6 is a
waste.
Well, one of the reasons why the Cobra is better than the T/A is
exclusivity... Not many Cobras are made each year (ON PURPOSE, not
because sales suck like the TA)... The WS6 is the same way... Only a
limited number are built...
Steve
That's why I opted not for the WS6, but I'm making mine look unique through
aftermarket parts. The Raptor hood looks better (IMHO) than the factory
WS6 hood, and I prefer the lowered look of the Eibach's over the stock WS6
suspension. Not only does my aftermarket hood look nicer (again MHO), it's
a sealed ram air whereas the factory ram air is not. It's more of a simple
cold air induction than a ram air system.
Agreed... I've actually seen tests where the SS runs slower than the
Z28. I would imagine that the same results might be found with the WS6
vs the TA.

Well, I will save $3,000 and be less 'exclusive' then. For the $3,000
savings I could have one quick 'base' T/A.

The T/As are not meant for the masses. Still, that doesn't make it a
bad car by any stretch.
Personally, I like the new Trans Ams (but then, I have always liked the
Pontiac TA, except for '82 to about '87), and, if they are still being built
in a few years when my '98 F150 is paid for, I will probably buy one then.
Mind you, I would NEVER, EVER buy a late model Camaro (they do nothing for
me).
When I buy a new vehicle, I generally like to buy top-of-the-line. That's
why I bought a Cobra when I did (and the hp, of course). If I were to buy a
Trans Am, I would buy it loaded as well, with all of the factory options
available to squeeze every single possible horse out of the motor. Also
consider that the resale value of the car is higher (usually) with the extra
options.
