I came across a 302 then was made into a 347 stroker engine
and I also came across a supercharged 302. I was wondering if a
supercharger
takes gas to run. Whether just having a stroker engine is more
dependible in
the long run. Is there more of a true power band in a stroker engine.
I am looking for advice.
<<<This is what I know about the stroker engine>>>
new 347 stroker, tremec tko, well over 15k invested,
1)347 has aprox. 2k on it....
2)tko trans has aprox.10k on it....
3)Hp aprox. 425 but never been on a dyno...
<<<This is what I know about the supercharged engine.>>>
I know more about the supercharged one then the stroker one.

If I could get just general views of the two modifications that would
be good.
I understand that you can have a stroker engine with a supercharger as
well. I just wondering difference between the two.
Chris
i would go with the supercharged one, blowers do not have low-end power
because the blower has to spool up, but it does have good top-end, the rpm
range depends on the motor......
the blown engine you described sounds like it has more power, and sounds
more dependable because it has o-ringed heads, which makes blowing a gasket
much harder....i'd go with the supercharged motor, if you got the 347,
you'll just want to add everyting to the 347 as the 302 has, i know i would
:)
A supercharged engine can get better gas mileage due to less
displacement and there is no mileage penalty from running one until you
start making boost. If tuned well and the power kept to around 425-450
rwhp they can be made reliable. The key is to make sure the engine does
not detonate. Also, with a blower more hp can be had by just installing
a smaller pulley.
I personally like the way a blower can make a car have a dual
personality. I have learned though that as a blown car increases in hp
the tuning gets more complex. The only stroker motor I would consider
over a blown 302 is a 351W stroked to 392-427 cubic inches. I've heard
mileage on these motors are really bad though and not the best for a
daily driver.
IMO you need to figure out what kind of power curve you want. A 347
stroker will give a nice torque curve where a centrifugally blown 302
will make the bulk of its power from 4,500-6,000+ rpm. I like the feel
of a nice flat torque curve and opted to put a Kenne Bell blower on a
302. I make 450+ ft-lbs of torque at the wheel at 2,500 rpm. When
driven easy my car feels like stock but with a blip of the gas pedal it
feels like a 460 cubic inch big block.

Depends how much you stroke it. A 302 stroked to 331 or 347 can be just
as reliable as a 302, as long as it is built properly and taken care of.

Your reliability and your power assumptions seem to be slightly off
base.
Stroking an engine has NO liner relationship to it's reliability.
Reliability and longevity are not the same thing. Stroking an engine
has far less effect on it's reliability or longevity then knowledgeable
planning and parts choices, quality of parts & workmanship while
building the engine, care and maintenance of the engine and how hard or
recklessly you thrash on it.
"blowers do not have low-end power" is not a statement made from
experience with blowers. It is right up there with the tired myth about
4-V Cleveland heads not being able to produce any low RPM torque, they
still make more than a 302.
Blower engines rule when they are set up right, the learning curve can
be tenuous and expensive. You could stroke and blow an engine too...

Furthermore, an engine with these kind of modifications isn't exactly
something you should own unless you know something about it. Since you're
asking the difference between forced induction and displacement (which is
coincidentally the big argument most racers have regarding engine building
and horsepower), I will assume that you don't know alot about these two
engines you're looking at.
Basically, all's I'm saying is be careful, because modified engines are
touchy. You have to know how they work, and how to treat them, and
ESPECIALLY how to fix them. So all that I ask it that you read up before you
make a choice. Otherwise you might be that guy running 87 octane gas in his
blown engine, or neutral-dropping his stroker...ya know?
Best of luck with the search though! IMHO, the blown 302 sounds like a very
well thought out engine...and you'll quite enjoy the sound the supercharger
makes (although it's only rival could be a stroker!)

Buy both, put the blower on the 347 and sell the other one without
the blower for the same amount of money. :oD
I already have a WRX as a daily driver but would like to have play car
to drive on nice days to work and on the weekends.
I am a computer programmer and not into cars. Used to own a slighty
mod. 88 GT. With chip, no cats, w/ex. done.
I have a good shop down the street that works on performance cars for
1/4, and does the work for a rigous price. So they would people the
maintaining the car. But I am looking for a car that will have less
problems and better gas mileage. I understand that term is relative.
12 mpg would be ok. As much as I don't no, I do know that the car
would take 93, like the WRX. Also that oil changes would have to be
done more often 3k. Maybe 1.5K. Anyways here are the two cars that I
am looking at.

Here is a link to the stroker car 89 Conv. Saleen replica
BTW you can see some of my idiot questions to the owner I asked.
http://www.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=302105
it has nicer body, racing seats more miles on it
Here is what a friend of the owner had to say about the car..
"Now i will tell you this much about the 89 Saleen replica of matts. It
is beautiful there is blue pearl in the artic white paint, the top is
new,the front seats alone cost 399.99 each the wing, ground effects are
real saleen parts there is 1k alone without paint. He takes real good
care of the car and i keep telling him NOT to sell it.If there were
anything that i would do different to his car it would be installing a
set of 4.10 gears in the rear and putting on a good set of drag
radials..Nittos or bfg'sand installing a nitrous kit.If you were to
come down and see his car in person you would fall in love with
it.There is not one part on the car that wasnt done right. This car
would easily go low 11's with a 125hp of nos on it.The edelbrock
performer rpm heads were all prof. ported by Dennis Lugo, his daughter
is Erica Lugo she has a mustang coupe the runs in the 8-9 sec.
range. The heads and porting cost him in the 3k range not to mention
all of the machine work that he had done to the block when the 347
Stroker was being built. As far as his motor against a supercharged 302
his will out last ,out rev and over power your basic 302 with 9 psi of
boost. If you go to Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords and read about the
articles that they wrote when they were building there stroker motor
combos and the carb. 347 laid down almost hp as and as much torque as
a 377 stroked windsor, thats impressive and it was all naturally
aspirated."

Here is the link the 87
http://www.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=297607
doesn't have racing seats, needs a trunk replaced, no backseats, more
horsepower, did dyno test the car for chip. All things brakes, engine,
supercharge, trany, clutch, have like no miles on them(1k). For the
most part about the engine looks perfect. I mean I like better
Edelbrock intake man., but still everything is new.
Can needs a paint job, has no back seats :-(, guessing will get better
gas mileage. Talk to the seller, really nice guy.
But both cars are really nice. I have no doubt both cars were truly
loved by there owners. The question is which is the better one for
me. Wanting the least amount of toubles with the car(I know there is
going to be some nature of the beast), have the HP, be the cheapest at
the pump. Not looking to take the car to the track just want the best
Mustang to bet all these moded Japanese cars on the road.
American Pride BABY..
Anyways what do you all think?
