There is a book called "Catalog of Mustang ID Numbers 19641/2 - '93". The
book will help you decode VIN plates, body tags, engine numbers, and paint
and trim codes.

Jeff,

The VIN number does not provide that kind of information.
The data plate on the driver's door jam does. Sometimes you are lucky
enough to find a "Build Sheet" under the back seat or below the
carpet. This will tell you everything you need to know. I know on
early Mustangs, a "Buck Tag", which is a small metal tag with code
numbers stamped into it, was mounted somewhere on the radiator support
bracket. This will tell you most of what you want to know also.
