Dong
There's a bunch of differences you can use to identify the model year of an early Mustang:
GRILLE
64 1/2 and 65 - honeycomb semi-flat black with the horse and corral
(the rectangular trim around the running horse,) in
the center. At the sides of the corral are two
"wings" that extend nearly the full width of the
grille.
66 - honeycomb grille replaced with a semi-flat black
grille with small horizontal chrome bars. The
horse and corral are the same, but the wings are
gone, except for cars equipped with the GT-style
fog lights.
67 - grille is the same as the 66 (?) but the wings are
back.
68 - wings are gone again, replaced with a chrome trim
ring on the inner circumference of the grille opening.
DOOR "VENTS"
64 1/2 and 65 - Small chrome trim with 5 or 6 small "peaks" along the
forward edge.
66 - two flavours - either no trim at all, or trim with a
more detailed simulation of a vent and 3 promenant bars
protruding from the leading edge of the trim.
67 - No trim for this year, but the simulated vent is two
groups of three intakes, deeply sculpted into the body.
68 - hard to describe, looks like a cheap plastic trim piece
glued on.
GAS CAPS
64 1/2 and 65 - Circular with a black plastic center.
66 - Circular with a satin finished center
67 - Circular with a black plastic center and three "tabs"
protruding from the circular cap.
68 - Circular with a black plastic center. The circumference
of the black center has a sawtoothed or gear-like pattern.
GENERAL APPEARANCE
In general the 64 1/2 through 66 Mustangs look very much alike with minor
differences in trim and interiotrs. 67 and 68 Mustangs look a little sleeker to
me, the big difference being an extended nose resulting in a deeper-set to the
grille.
For those with a REALLY good eye, the 67 and 68 cars are a *touch* wider.
To tell the difference between a 67 and a 68, look for the absense of the 67's distinctive door vents and the 68's federally mandated rear quarter-panel
reflectors.
The 2+2 of Fastback body style changed in 67 also. 64 1/2 to 66, the
roofline sloped to a short trunk lid and then continued at a different angle
to the end of the car. In 67, the roofline continued to the end of the car
with no angle change. This roofline included the trunk lid.
MISC
It is generally accepted that 64 1/2 mustangs should have a generator,
and the V8's were generally 260's instead of 289's, although there are
exceptions.
Hubcaps are another way to tell the difference, but I've seen so many
Mustangs with the incorrect ones on them, that this is not a reliable way
of identifying the year.

One more thing that wasn't mentioned to differentiate these cars. The
taillight triads became slightly larger in '67. Taillights from
'64 1/2 - 66 are the same.
