Charlie, the 302 firing order changed with the 1982 models, and since
has been the same as the 351 and 460.
Usually a cam referred to as being applicable for a 289/302 has the old
firing order (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8) (watch the 7 & 8 wires).
In turn, a cam referred to as aplicable for the 302/351 has the new firing
order (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8) (watch the 6 & 5 wires).
(watch the x & x wires) because these are sequential firing cylinders,
and the primary location of cross-firing between cylinders if the plug
wires are run parallel to each other.

You got it backwards. The 302 HO (1982+) used the 351W firing order. Something
to do with reduced main bearing loads, if I remember correctly. The early
HO actually used a "marine" (1973 part number) camshaft until the '85 roller
cam came out.
