The best I can tell you is open it up and look it over. If the gears look
worn, buy a Tremec. You can rebuild a T5 pretty cheaply if you do it
yourself, and you ONLY need the basic rebuild kit. But if you have to
start ordering gearsets left and right, you might as well get a new tranny.

Get a Tremec.

All rebuild it for ya... If just 3rd gear is shot .. Which its
prolly not just 3rd.. its prolly the cluster and 3rd gear... your
looking at about 249 right there... 50 bucks labor if you want me to
rebuild it... I have a used cluster and 3rd gear also...
get back to me....
if you decide to buy a new tranny let me know... all buy this
broken one from ya..

Yea I know but I doont think I have enough to buy one AND have it put in. If I
cant get one what would you sugguest instead. I could completly rebuild this
or go for something like a brand new c-4. Thanks

tremics are good.... still can break 3rd in em... But the chances
are way less than a t-5... the gears are way beefier.
anyway.. how much horse power you running... And how do you shift?
you power shifting? you might get away with a 90 up gear set.. I
have an 87 Gt stock tranny and run 13..2s all day.. no trackion..
but I have about 320 hp or so and its holding... it may be the way
your shifting or ... Do you run slicks or cheaters???

Of course, you forgot to mention the part about where you noticed the
T-5 was making noise, was low on fluid, and then proceeded to fill it
with gear oil. I'm sure that did wonders for it. ;-/
Chris
It only had gear oil in it for @10 miles. then it was drained, seals were
replaced and atf was put in. I doubt that did much of anything during 10-15
miles. Plus it lasted for 2000 miles before only 3rd gear went out.

How much of a jetting are you running? Is it a progressive system?
Running a non-progressive 150 shot is much harder on the drivetran
than running a progressive 200 hp shot (FWIW)

That's going to be murder on a T-5 as well.

I would recomend getting a T-56 6 speed out of a
Firebird/Camaro/Viper. you can find one with no miles on it all for
about $1,000, and they're much stronger than a Tremec. (The 94+ T56 6
speeds are rated at 450 lb-ft) It's a odable swap to get one behind a
302, and it only takes a minimum of alteration. (I have a Car Craft
somewhere that shows you how to do it.)

ok... I belive you need a different drive shaft.. ( shorter,
differernt input (27 spline I think))... you need to modify the cross
member and move it back... Different bell houseing... extend all the
wiring to the current t-5 for the new tranny... ie speedo, backup
switch... I can't think of anything else.. hmm..
we just changed one back from a T56 to T-5 couple months ago..

I still here if you power shift tremecs 3rd gear they go... But I
dont know what kind of horse power they were running... my stock 87
tranny is still running... lots of drags on it... shit load of power
shifting... But maybe its cause I dont have good trackion... only
pulling 13.2s on street tires...
Wow that sucks. I would really like to know if that is true, I dont want to
find out the hard way. If you know somewhere I might be able to find out, that
would be great. I thought the tremec was stronger overall than the T5

There is no big mystery here. Neither of these transmissions is designed
to be abused (I think we can all agree that powershifting is abuse). If
you have one that lasts through this kind of treatment consider yourself
lucky. Generally speaking, drag racing is very hard on the drivetrain
(though as others have pointed out, you can lessen this by using skinny
tires....you're substituting tire longevity for drivetrain longevity).
I think it's really neat that you want to race your 'stang. I like
to race mine too. But I also think you need to accept the bad with
the good. You'll break parts. And parts like transmissions can be
expensive. 8-)
And to answer your question above....yes, the Tremec is a bit stronger
than the T-5, though it's not bulletproof.
Chris
Just by the superior tone that you were using.

I have two friends that are previous DSM owners that would disagree with
you.
-Adam
Why do folks call them DSM's? They're Mitsubishi automobiles. You
know, the same folks that built the Zeros. :)
Chris
BTW, you may have 2 friends that disagree with WT (Adam), but I have 1500+
that disagree with you. Larger sample. I have also known 2 people on one
block to have total LEMON Mustangs, yet known a club of dozens with only
the minor annoyances that crop up from time to time. So again, I stick to
YMMV. NEITHER of my 2 DSMs have probs that I don't cause from high-stress
launches at the track (total "breakage" - split the sidewalls on my street
tires after 30K miles on them).

One had a Talon the other had an eclipse so it's easier to refer to them as
DSM cars. sort of like how "F-Body" refers to both the Camaro and the
Firebird.

Dont get me wrong... The tremec is way above the t-5... but I just
herd from sources that the tremecs 3rd goes also.. Like I said I dont
know how much power they were running... I have seen the inside of a
tremec... Rick dont worry about breaking 3rd gear.. that tranny is way
way stronger than your t-5... trust me..
If you can't get one, then I wouldn't waste any money on a "good"
tranny. Just get something that'll get you around until you can get a
Tremec or T-56.
