I have a 1968 Mustang 289-2V and I plan on rebuilding the engine here
in a week or so. I'm thought about using a 289 long block. But, I
would like to drop a 351W, if it would fit without a whole lot of
adaptation. Does anyone know if this replacement can be done fairly
easily without much extra expense?

Thanks

Go for the Boss DUDE. kicks ass, I got one. Alot easier to
mount than a 460 fathead

The lower radiator outlet is on the other side on a 351, so you will have
to have that switched on your radiator. 289 headers will not fit. Use
headers for the 351W in the 69/70 mustang. Other than that it is a
straight shoe-in- NO PROBLEMS!!!

Feel great when you kick it, too!

I just did the same swap on a '67. you might be able to use the '68
water pump (unless it is an aluminum one). and the headers for a '69-70
fit as though they were made for the car. Good Luck!

p.s. make sure your intake is not too tall.

You mean, use the cast iron water pump from the 302 on the 351? Seems so
simple!

If the 351W is stock, use the 351 manifolds. They're similar to the
289HiPo units. Also, I have tried headers designed to fit the 289/302 on
the 351W equipped cars. Watch the collector clearance against the floors
and transmission crossmember, you'll be suprised that they should fit
with little or no modifications.

Install a radiator from a '69 351W equipped Mustang. It'll be close
enough to be a bolt in or near bolt in job with the right mounts.

Make sure the starter will fit properly. I know the starter
applications are different for 351W equipped cars than 289/302 cars. I
think the bendix or snouts are different, possibly in length or bendix
placement. Check it out carefully though.

Other than all of the aforementioned details, the swap is an easy, bolt
in affair that should give you little or no grief.

Good luck. -Mike.
