I have read the recent threads regarding the popular exhaust packages from
the like of Flowmaster, Bassani, Borla and others. In all these posts I
didn't see an entry regarding Dr. Gas' X-Pipe.

I don't know anything about it myself, my reference comes from the May 2001
Issue of 5.0 Mustangs and Super Fords, (p115, X-Files: The Sequel). The
aforementioned article brings favor to the X-pipe over H-pipe
configurations, and touts Dr. Gas' pipe because the X is located farther
forward than its competition. The Dyno results show a sizeable HP gain,
(comparing the Dr.Gas X-pipe to the stock H-pipe) throughout the RPM range,
(+7.1HP @ 2,000RPM to a peak of +27.8HP @ 5,700HP). The X-pipe tested in
the article seems to be the catless, "offroad" version, (although no mention
is made in the article).

Anybody here have personal experience with Dr. Gas?
Please try to avoid the comments regarding flatulence... ; )

Do they make a 'street legal' version of this pipe?

What did you team it with, (mufflers, tail pipe)?

A web site was referenced, ( www.drgas.com ) I have just looked there, and
will pursue more information. I would really like some testimonials from
members of the group.

As you can guess, I am planning on dumping my stock exhaust, for an x-pipe
configuration with some "throaty" muffs.

I have a Dr. Gas x-pipe on my 1989 GT. I do like the x-pipe and it seems to
quiet the car down a bit at idle and during cruise time. I have MAC full
length headers and 2 chamber Flowmaster cat back system. It has a unique
sound at part throttle and full throttle. The only thing I do not like
about the Dr. Gas is that it basically requires you to take the car to a
muffler shop to get it all welded up. Mine required some cutting of some of
the tubes also so it was not a direct fit. As far as I know they do not
have a cat x-pipe. However, I am sure Bassani has a cat x-pipe.
If I had to do it over again, I would have tried the Bassani x-pipe. I had
to pay over $100 to have the x-pipe welded up and having the pipes trimmed
to fit. It took the guy around 2 1/2 hours to do the job. I could have
saved that money and bought a Bassani and it would have already been put
together so I could have done it myself.

As far as cat back systems go, to each his own. I have always preferred the
Flowmaster sound and have for 11 years with this Mustang. I have had 2
chamber Flowmasters (old black style) and the Dynomax. The 2 chamber
Flowmasters were my first pair and when I upgraded to 2 1/2 tailpipes I got
the Dynomax mufflers. I did not like them. They did not drone on the
highway at cruise speed but when you let off the gas the whole car would
shake and rattle. I had my old Flowmasters put back on!! That was over 75k
ago. When I rebuilt the motor this past summer all new exhaust was put on.
I now have the Flowmaster 2 chamber cat back with the x-pipe and full length
headers. The x-pipe kills the droning that so many people hate. My wife
has a 98 Cobra with 3 chamber Flowmasters on it with the factory h-pipe and
tells me she wishes it was louder. It has a nice rumble and can barely be
heard from inside the car.
The x-pipes will cost you from $200-$275 without cats and a catback
(depending on what you want) will run you from $200-$500.

Good luck,
Casey

I read Casey's post first too.

My 89 Saleen has had a Dr. Gas! X-Pipe on it since 1990. Shorty headers,
and Dr. Gas! Spin Tech Muffs. Definatly an original sound, and not one you
are going to find with FlowBastard's or GynoMax. As for what Casey said,
i've looked under my car throughly before and mine was cut or torched.
Straight bolt on. You can specify for them to ship the X-pipe to you in
peices, or complete welded unit. There is a guy here locally with the same
type setup as Casey (long tubes and their x-pipe) with the same muffs and
tips as I have. He said it was a direct bolt in w/o cutting as well.

As for the Cats, I am pretty sure they dont make one with cats. Since this
exhaust is actually made for SCCA type racing, where Emissions is null and
void even in emissions states (like Utah where i bought my car, and where
Dr. Gas! is located). If you dont have emissions in your state, and dont
plan on moving to one anytime soon, drop the cats from your car, buy some
MIL Eliminators, and go to town with it. If you have Emissions, just go
ahead and dump the money into a Basanni.

As for Cat-Back, I couldent steer you one way or another. Personally, for
that i'd just have a muff shop bend up piping for that to be done custom to
which ever mufflers you like best.

Could you try to describe the sound? I heard a car that I think was equipped
with this set up once, and I loved it! The guy dropped the clutch and did a
high RPM launch, and it sounded like a cross between a CART car and a
Restrictor-plate Winston Cup car. Since then, I have wondered if this is the
set up he had or not.

Also check out www.vrsexhaust.com for a cheaper X pipe. I found them in a
recent 5.0 mustang mag...Aluminized pipes ....and seem to always be in stock
when I order for my customers. They are only $159 plus shipping for any
model 86-01 for offroad version and $359 for catted versions... I sell them
a little bit cheaper than they do direct as well. :-)

I put a Dr. Gas X-Pipe on my 85 Gt a few years ago, and didn't have any
problems other than laying on my back with the car on jack stands and
the natural joy of putting together a five piece X-Pipe....

I have Motorsport shorities with the Dr. Gas X-Pipe and 3 chamber
Flowmasters. I would say the X-Pipe definitely made the car quieter plus
gave it a higher pitch. I get a lot of complements on how it sounds. I
don't think I would ever put an H-Pipe on a Mustang again, but thats
just me :)

If your not able to weld it yourself and don't want to pay someone to do
it, maybe you might want to try using clamps. Summit sells a stainless
band clamp that works pretty well, I think they cost about $8 each...
