I have a 1994 ranger supercab with 2.3 liter and 5 speed
im am going to try to put a 5.0 with a c4 (hopefully) or 5 speed in the
truck.

i know the current rear end wont take the stress of a 300+ hp v8
so do you know of any 9inch positive traction rear ends that are
similar sized to the stock rear end? the dealer said it was a 8 inch
rear end not even a 8.8
is this true?

this truck is going to be a autocross type vehicle with high cornering
ability plus high
horsepower when i am done (in a few years). any help with recommending
suspension components for this? have found only a few parts for front
suspension
but none for rear..

any help or comments on this project would be vastly appreciated.
thank you
Erik

Since your truck came with a four cylinder engine, the rear axle is most
likely a 7.5" unit. My '93 4.0 had an 8.8". My neighbors '94 2.3 had a
7.5". Another neighbor had an 8.8" traction lock in his '95 4.0. The
8.8" diff is a direct replacement for the 7.5" diff. You should be able
to locate one at a salvage yard.

If you're worried about whether or not the 8.8" unit will be able to
handle the horsepower, some guys out west put a Mustang T-5 and
supercharger, along with a lot of engine and suspension mods, in a '91
4.0 Ranger x-tra cab. Final result, 295hp, impressive 1/4 mile times
(for a pick-up), a substantial improvement in handling and an average
top speed of 149 mph (IIRC) in the Silver State Classic.

Parts for modifying the front suspension of the Ranger aren't cheap. The
only way I've seen to lower the front end is to by new axles that have
the ends modified to allow a 2", 3" or 4" drop. The rear end is a pain
to lower since the axle is on the underside of the leaf springs. You can
buy "de-arched" rear spring, install a shackle kit or install a "flip
kit" to lower the rear. Each has its +'s and -'s.

I have an old Super Fords mag with the original Supercharged Ranger
article. I'll send the info to you so you can get in touch with the
company (4.0 Litre Perfomance?) that created this beast and get their
catalog.

My father has an 85 Ranger with a ..uh..car-bor-ated 302 in it. I'll ask him.
As far as the rea-end goes, he still has the stock rear from 1985. he does
however have a 3-speed racing automatic tranny. The thing is SLOWWWWWWWWW.

Why is it so slow? low HP or bad gearing? the 5.0 im putting in my Ranger made
on the dyno 290+ hp and it was built to run 150 hp N20 kit..
with 440 hp total and maybe 400hp at the rear tires i wouldnt think it would be so
slow.

Erik,

The company I referred to is 4.0 Liter Performance, which is a
associated with Central Coast Mustang in Santa Maria, CA. The latest
info I have is:

708 B West Betteravia
Santa Maria, CA 93455
805-925-8848

They added a bunch of goodies to a '91 x-tra cab Ranger.

Paxton supercharger
GM, yes, GM T-5 (it fit better than the Ford T-5)
77mm mass air meter
4.0LP 62mm throttle body
4.0LP camshaft
110 lph fuel pump
30lb injectors
Superchip (5700rpm redline/no top speed governor)
ported heads
JBA shorty headers
3in exhaust w/Flowmasters
Bell Tech 3in lowering I-Beams (front) and 4in lowering blocks (rear)
Rancho shocks
1-1/8"(F) and 7/8"(R) sway bars
17x8 wheels with 245/45-17(F) and 270/40-17(R) Michelin XGT's
Wildwood four wheel disc brake conversion
Stillen rear roll pan

Horsepower is estimate at 295 bhp. With 3.73's, the truck runs the 1/4
in 13.20@103. With 2.73's, the truck ran the Silver State Classic, a 93
mile road race in Nevada, at an average speed of 132 mph. It was clocked
at 147 mph during the race.

This could be you!

Have you thought about transplanting a 8.8" from a Mustang? That's what I put
in my Ranger powered by a 5.0, and it's holding up well so far. It's stock
from an '86 GT with the 2.73's. The only reason I'm thinking about a 9" is to
get the discs. I saw a Grenada at a U-Pull-It, but the rear was gone, same on
a Versailles. The only thing I had done to the 8.8 was taking it to the welder
and locating my Ranger shock mounts onto the Mustang rear. Just a suggestion.

This set up is good (CCM) but why not turbo the 2.3 with the set up out of an
old T coupe and upgrade turbo? Add some port work and bam, a fast light
menuverable truck! I would trade My 5.0LX for a SVO stang in like cond. any
day...Sean

Summit does list 4.10s for the Ford 7.5", so it would be possible. I don't
know what your Ranger will have, though.
