I have 66 with a 289 & C4 tranny. On the gear selector what do the green
dot and white dot mean. How do they really differ. When I drive in white
dot the transmission doesn't seem to downshift all the way to 1st and it
doesn't take off as fast as it does in green dot. Any light shed on this
would be great. thanks in advance

Well, as you discovered it lock out 1st gear. It purpose is to
allow you to start in 2nd gear when on icy or slick roads.

I have the same transmission; I was told by Aamco that
it is not a C4, but a "Green Dot" transmission. Perhaps
someone else can shed some light on it.

Anyway, this transmission is very simple. Pull it all
the way back; you're in Low 1 (first). Pull to the white
dot, and you're in Low 2 (second). Pull to the green dot
and you're in Drive.

The transmission will not shift automatically out of
Low 1 or Low 2. This is nice for hard driving; it's
annoying to flip a transmission out of Low 1 into second
and have it prematurely shift up to third. Also, Low 2
is convenient for starting on slippery roads, when you
don't want an extremely low gear ratio working against you.

To summarize, you have a three-speed automatic. Low 1
is equivalent to the lowest gear in Drive. Low 2 is
equivalent to the second gear in Drive.

It sounds to me like you are describing the transmission I had in my 66
289. We called it a "cruis-o-matic". I think that's the correct spelling. I
think that's even what they called it in the owner's manual. I always
just put it in drive and went. I'd put it into a lower gear if the roads
were exceptionally slick (muddy in our case), which I think is what Matt
described as staying in 2nd.

I've heard it is a good transmission to have. I only had a couple
thousand miles on mine when someone hit me. Now the bell housing is
cracked. I don't know how long it would have lasted but it shifted
really, really well while I could drive it.

I haven't heard it called a green dot. But, I also didn't talk with many
people who knew there was anything other than the C4 put in the early
mustangs.

Enjoy your cars! I miss mine. Currently we're working on a Galaxie.
Remember them?

The transmission is a Cruise O Matic. Low stays in first, the white dot starts
in 2nd and shifts to 3rd. The green dot starts in 1st and shifts to 2nd and 3rd.
Use the white dot for slippery conditions.

Hi folks;
During the years that the early mustangs came out, Ford automatic
transmissions had a great advantage on snow. The reason is when you put
the transmission in 2nd gear that is the gear it took off in, so when you
were on snow you put the shifter in 2nd gear and the tires wouldn't spin
as bad when you took off. In drive the transmission would take off in 1st
(low) gear. In low it would take off in low and stay there until you
manually shifted it to 2nd or drive.
It appears the green dot setting on you shifter puts the transmission into
2nd gear.

Regards

John

If that's the case, then mine is incorrect. It does not
shift to third when started in second. This is possible,
now that I think about it. I do have the Cruise-o-matic
bezel.
