Went to the local Ford dealer the other day to check on a new distributor
cap and rotor for my 95 GT, and was told the Motorcraft cap alone costs $40!
Shouldn't have been surprised I guess, since the dealer was charging $3.49
each for Motorcraft ASF42C spark plugs, while the local AutoZone has the
same plugs for $1.39 each. Passed on the distributor cap for the time
being, and went over to AutoZone to see if they had a better price.

It turns out the AutoZone didn't have the Motorcraft cap, but instead had a
cap/rotor kit made by Conrad for $14.95. I sort of wanted to stay with the
Motorcraft cap just to keep to stick with the original parts, but the guy at
AutoZone claimed that the Conrad cap is actually superior because it has
brass contacts instead of aluminum like the Motorcraft.

Is the Conrad cap/rotor kit really better than the original Motorcraft
parts? Any other recommendations?

Just one brand of caps to stay away from are the ones from GP Sorensen. When
one snaps the hold down clips in place the cap still sits too loosely on top.

I've used Accel and Blue Streak on my 5.0, both worked well. Brass contacts
are definately the way to go, much more resistant to moisture. Next time i may
try MSD, since i have their coil and 6A box.

There is a Motorcraft distributor cap available that has brass contacts,
it's actually listed for a 1995 Mustang specifically. The p/n is
F5ZZ-12106-AA, in Canada it's Motorcraft # DH-3221 . Up here in the GWN,
they are less money than the aluminum terminal cap from Ford.

Bill,

My EFI 460 likes to get that crud build up on the contacts of the cap really
fast. I can usually tell by the corresponding loss of power. Expensive
brass or cheaper aluminum doesn't seem to make a difference in how fast it
fowls up. I just carefully scrape the crud off and use the same cap & rotor
much longer than I could otherwise. I have had the same problem with many
big and small blocks on all of my Ford distributor caps and rotors both
carbureted and fuel injected. I absolutely can not determine a benefit from
either the brass or the aluminum...

Maybe some folks can see a difference I can not. Fords Motorcraft cap and
rotors and the after market brass caps crap out just as fast. I suggest you
save your money, and buy the cheap one!

I use Accell caps as they are readily available in my area. Blue streak
works fine too...FMS is fine but I find that the best deal for the money is
the Accel one...your mileage could vary...

Mustangs Unlimited lists part no. M12106B302 (M=Motorsport?, #12106?) as the
"Ford Racing" distributor cap & rotor kit. Designated for '86 through '95
5.0's, the kit retails at $26.95.

The dealer, asking $40 for a Motorsport distributor cap ($22.95 at MU)
better throw in a new dust boot, as well, for that money!
