My car is currently black, I'm planning on sanding it down to the primer and
using House of Kolors Orion Silver base/and uc35 clear. I'm currently
feeling I should get 2 quarts of primer and a quart of black (bc25) to give
a dark base and tint the orion silver to a darker grey, 2 quarts of the
orion silver base and 4 quarts of clear. Sound logical? I'm going with all
hok stuff from here:
http://www.hokpaint.com/scripts/depot.exe?pgm=showchip1.bbx

I'm gonna take it down to the primer because the previous owner must have
followed too close to a gravel truck or something because there are lots of
small pits and chips on the front fenders and hood. There's also a parking
lot ding in the drivers side door that has a slight wave to it and a spot
near the trunk lid where a jack handle fell against it when it was in my
dad's shop installing a new motor. I'm hoping this can be filled with
primer and block sanded straight, but I've only painted an ol 4 wheel drive
and used bondo aplenty on it so my body/paint experience is liimited. I'm
open to any advice on filling in the dings and chips on the hood and
fenders. I'm also thinking about painting the wheels black. They're Cobra
r's that I've stripped (tough stuff, used 2 cans of stripper and still
working on it)most of the coating off thinking about polishing them, but
like the idea of black wheels with the dark grey car.

I want it to look good since I just installed a 351W w/ edelbrock heads,
torker2 intake, holley 650 dble pumer, .533 lift compucam, 10:1 compression
and 100 horse wet plate nitrous. I'm low on cash now and can't justify
paying 700-1000 labor on something i'm sure I can do myself. I've got a
good place to paint and will get the 99 dollar devilbiss hvlp gravity feed
sprayer on ebay and practice painting my baja bug since I could use practice
and it can use a shot of john deere green. Thanks

I'm not trying to be hurtful here, we'll call it blunt.

If you do not know how much paint to buy for your car, you have no business
trying to do it yourself.

Silver is a VERY difficult color to paint. Paint these days is generally 2
stage, requires specific thinners and hardners and a clear coat over the
top. If you don't know what you are doing, you will get what we call
dappling. Ever see a dappled grey horse? You get the picture.

Next, many of those little chips do not have to be sanded to the primer.
There are specific products to fill them, then feather them out. If you
don't know what you are doing while sanding, you will get "ass holes" in
your finish, those ugly little rough edges that show through when it's too
late.

Prepping is critical to a good paint job, a proper compressor, paint booth,
paint gun, masking job and detail work to complete it.

If you don't want your car to end up looking like you did it yourself in the
back yard with a spray can, take it to a shop. A Baja buggy is NOT a stang.

At least you replied and with sound advice...however, I didn't know how to
play a guitar until I tried(well, and practiced); let me talk myself back
into it. My dad said he painted his 72 mustang (mach1 and my first car, btw)
in the late 80's and used 2quarts base and 4 clear. I used 4 quarts on my
truck, no clear and I used a rattle can on my PC case, but that doesn't
really count

> Prepping is critical to a good paint job,

I understand the getting the base right is essential for a good finish and
since it's only gonna cost me time, I have no problem sanding to the
original primer (plus I hit a tree yesterday and have to do a little more
body work, new hood, new windshield and new bumper oh and airbags and
tires...YES$$! luckily the new griffin radiator is unharmed ;)

> what we call dappling.
Oh...
The HOK website does a great job of explaining the processes for applying
and required components( retarder and reducers)to be added. My dad used to
lease his shop to a mechanic that painted in it. The shop is well equipped
(good lighting, 5 horse air compresser, tools galore and clean and has
plenty of space to set up a spray booth

Since I have limited experience, I'm gonna practice before I use the good
stuff and I can garauntee that I won't let it out in public looking like a
backyard spray can job.

Yeah, atleast mustangs are faster

Well good luck to ya kid! I hope it comes out just beautiful :)

As fas as how much, go to the local automotive paint supplier, they can fill
you in on the details, and prolly how much. If not, slip in behind a local
body shop and talk to one of the painters, they are generally willing to
advise you on what to do and will oftentimes give you sound advice on your
project.

Sorry to hear about the tree, man that sucks!
