I've been told that they are 8x5" plate speakers stock, and to put in
5.25" aftermarket speakers, I'll need to have some adapter plates
made.
Two shops quoted 170$ Canadian for installation which includes making
those door adapter plates...
Do I really need adapter plates to put in 5.25" aftermarket speakers?
What setups do you guys have?

5.25 speakers tend to be more efficient than 5x7's (same as 6x8). Plus there
is a greater selection out there for 5.25 in the upper range. I would
recommend getting a nice set of 5.25 coax's and invest in some adapter plates.
I know that Metra USED to make them, they should still be around (the adapters
that is.) They are plastic and you screw the 5.25 to the plate, then screw the
plate into the hole....voila! Tunes! Good luck!

$170 for a speaker install? That's a total rip-off! Oh wait, that's
Canadian. So, what is that, like $120 in U.S. dollars? Still a
rip-off! I've got a set of Boston Accoustic 5.25 seperates in my TBird
(they were also in my '94 Mustang when I had it). I used .25" plywood
to make the mounting plates. Piece of cake, cheap, and works like a
charm.
