What would be a good brake dual master cylinder would be a good replacement
on a 65 Mustang to replace the single fruit jar master cylinder?

I am replacing the front drums with Granda spindles and disc brakes which I
have ready to go on and I am about to start replacing the front steel brake
lines and thinking about using larger lines that match the Granada's brake
line since I am using the proportioning valve that came off the Granada. I
believe that I am going to use the Granada master cylinder since it matches
up with exception of the length of the brake push rod which I have ordered a
adjustable one from www.mustangdepot.com (I almost bought the power brake
upgrade kit but decided that I couldn't afford it since after I tore into
the front I am replacing springs, bushings and ball joints). if I stay with
the Granada MC then I don't need any adapters except for the smaller
original line going to the back brakes (right?).

The master cylinders by themselves are fairly cheap, are there any that are
better that others for upgrading to disc brakes and getting the safer dual
reservoir master cylinder?? I am also concerned about braking function as
for the time being I am staying with manual brakes but I figure I can go
with the vacuum assisted boosters later.

Also will the 67 Mustang with dual master cylinder with vacuum booster fit
in a 65 Mustang or is there anything link the brake push rod that won't work
with the older Mustang? I can get that as a kit from my local auto parts
for $150 with a $50 core, of course unless I find a old one in a junk yard,
I will be out the core charge so it will cost me around $200 plus tax....
and I assume will require line adapters to fit the larger front brake line
connectors including the proportioning valve.

Get the Granada MC for manual brakes. It fits perfectly and use the
rod from the old one and it fits perfectly. I have a 64.5 and had a
brake booster on it that I had to remove(it was so close to fitting)
and I thought it would suck not having power brakes. NOT. The
Granada swap is so great that there is no need for the power brakes.
waste of cash.

I haven't put much effort yet into figuring out how to connect the
brake lights. On my ride the brake lights plug into the single MC. I
suspect it would not connect to the prop valve. If yours is the same
way let me know how you did it.

The brake warning lamp switch is just a two prong connector on the prop
valve. I would assume that just grafting on the granada connector
the two stock wires would make it functional.

Going with the non power Granada seems like what I will do, on the brake
light the 64 1/2 has the brake light built into the MC and on the 65 and
later the brake light switch is mounted on the brake lever like most more
modern cars do today. Now the brake warning light isn't a option on the 65
(later years have it, or perhaps the GT Rally option in true 65 models may
have?) BUT as far as real brake warning light goes; the proportioning valve
which I took off the donor Granada has the warning switch built into it so I
may wire up a warning light off it since I cut the wiring for it and have it
to.

In my research on late model Mustang brake conversions, I have seen several
Mustang part shops that sell a inline pressure regulated switch to allow the
rear brake lights to be operational in converted systems.

The only thing about going with the Granada non power MC is that the front
wheel brake line is larger than the power one and I going to need to find a
adapter to go from 3/8 to 1/4 (I believe that's right?) lines which will
match the proportioning valve outlets, the power MC matches the line sizes
since I have the intact line that goes from the MC to the valve. (the local
parts store in my area has both MC's which I have already checked out, the
cost only $14 with a $1 core).

What type of line adapter did you use to adapt the port on the non-power
Granada MC to the 1/4 lines? I just spent the last hour & half trying to
find the right adapter (I'm putting in larger 1/4 lines in the front and to
the proportioning valve since that matches the old lines), I found one that
fit the MC but not the 1/4 line or would the 1/4 line but not the threads on
the MC. I'm going to a couple more auto parts store tomorrow, the NAPA
store I expect will have what I need...

1/4 inch brake line? On the 65 or the granada stuff?

I've only seen 1/8 ID line on fords of this era, mavericks, granadas etc
drum or disc. Ford used some different sized fittings in places where the
wrench size or the thread size would be different, (hence the adaptor
use I've done) but the line was always 1/8 ID. I don't have a granada
master cylinder handy, but I do have a 77 monarch non-power prop. valve
here along with a piece of generic, regular auto-parts store brake line
1/8 inch ID, with flares and fittings. All 5 ports on this thing are for
1/8 inch line with the 3/8th inch (thread) fittings. The auto-parts store
line fits all of em.

AAAAHHHHhh... Your are correct! I just realized I bought the wrong size
brake lines...

The flex lines from the calipers are 1/4 as well as on the rear port on the
MC, I just assumed the other's were 1/4 too, the adapter I am looking for is
the port on the MC for the front brakes which is larger than 1/4. I will
also need an adapter for the flexlines to go from 1/4 to the 1/8 not to
mention a adapter for the 1/4 port from the MC's rear brake port to the 1/8
line. I got some idea that the brake lines on the Granada were larger than
those on the Mustang.

I thought the lines I bought was a little big, fortunately I haven't started
bending or cutting the new lines!

Ok, on am on my way down the correct path, I went to a independent small
manager owned auto parts store and they fixed me up right away.

I'm going to try to take the old steel lines 1/4 threaded end off the frame
bracket (the flex hose to steel line bracket which I took of the donor car)
and try to double flair the new 1/8 line with the 1/4 connecter since that
was the same size of the original line on the Granada. This way I only need
two adapters at the MC and don't need an extension line to connect the front
steel line to the flex hose since I will run the new steel lines in front of
the front wheels.

When done it will appear completely original (and confuse the heck out of
the next owner in 30 years when they try to buy a flex hose for it!)

I had to spend much time at my local auto parts store to get the
adapters. It isn't really a common part for them. Be patient and you
will find them. If I remember the rear brakes on the MC needed an
adapter and adapters for the hard line to flex line inside the wheel
well.

That sounds right on with my experiences, ford using 1/8th inch line with
large thread connecters. I did something similiar when I had to replace
the long line going to the rear brakes. I cut, slid on the orginal
connector and flared the line. Although I couldn't buy line long enough
so I kept the front and rear-portions which were like new and replaced
the long straight center section with new line. Used female-female
connectors to join the pieces, exactly the way the factory did the line over
to the passenger front wheel.
