In '96, Ford changed the way it offered the Mustang. All
the "extras" of the GT were put into an option packaged
called "3". Thus, a '96 GT without option package 3, was
similar to the GTS. A '96 GT with option package 3, and
almost all GT had option package 3, was what we typically
think of for a GT.
The "S" in GTS stands for "stripped". Its a V8 with nothing in it, bascially.

I did buy a '96 GT(S). It came much as you described in your post (and as I
described in my previous post).
I'm not sure how much (if any) weight is saved by the absence of the power
locks/windows. I've read the power locks/windows actuators are lighter than the
manual ones since the manual ones have to be heavier to deal with ham-fisted
humans (present company excluded) while the mechanical ones need only be heavy
enough to deal with the device they are supposed to act upon.
Love that 5spd, A/C, and V8, except for the damn plastic intake and valve
covers. (A service rep. at a local dealer damned the very same items. Seems
plastic isn't necessarily better, at least the way Ford does plastic...)
Sincerely,
MarcW. (Yes, I'm still grump about the intake manifold and valve covers.)
