I was down at Buerge Ford this last weekend in W. Los Angeles, looking
to buy a new Focus for my mom. While looking at cars, I heard this
beautiful muscle exhaust sound coming from the service bay. It was a
2001 Green Mustang with the letter "R" in red under the GT emblem. I
didn't see any tags on it, so it appeared to be a customer's car for
service - not for sale by the dealership.

It sounded great. I asked all the sales people about the "R" and no
one had any idea what it stood for. And since Buerge Ford is not an
SVT dealer - they didn't know if it was a new SVT for 2001 or 2002.
But I do know it wasn't the much fancied Cobra R - didn't have many of
the Cobra R features (wheels, rear wing, etc.).

Any one ever see one of these GT"R"? Although not certain, the emblem
did look factory - not aftermarket.

And by the way - Beverly Hills Ford had Two 2001 Saleen 281's on their
showroom floor: non-supercharged: $35,000; and the 281SC was
$40,000. And these were regular hardtop models - not convertibles.

I wish I had my digital camera to have taken a picture, but I could
have sworn that the R was kinda embedded into the lower part of the GT
(meaning it was one emblem, not two joined together). I could be
wrong - and if no one else has seen it, them I'm most likely mistaken.

Ford just called saying they wrote something in the contract
incorrectly and need me there to re-sign the contract - it won't
affect the purchase price or my payments. When I get there tonight,
I'll make sure to take my camera - just in case the "GTR" is still
there.

Someone posted a few pictures a while back, basically showing off the
"GTR" emblems. It was meant as a joke, akin to how you see imports with
their "R" stickers and emblems all over the place. That's probably all
this was.

OK you asked so i'll tell you what it really is.....Its domestic rice!!! I
have seen a few stangs with tht GTR decal on them. You can order them or
buy them from almost any import parts place that sells decals and like.
They are from the Nissan Skyline with the GT is silver or chrome above a big
red R. Why someone would do this is beyond me but thats where it came
from!! Also is you really don't believe me or actually want one you can see
or buy the decal at www.dugan-racing.com , I found the ad in Muscle Mustangs
and Fast Fords and you can see it on the Skyline either on your PS2 Gran
Torismo game or here www.skylinezone.com . Hope the info helps and makes
you realize that your not missing out on any kind of special edition Stang!!

Thanks Kamal. I believe you - no reason not to; especially since Bill
S. and Brian are stating the same.

Just makes me feel better that I didn't miss out on a special "R"
edition :-)

I went throught the same thing you did when i first got my stang. I saw
this R thing and was like why didn't they offer up one of them at the
dealer, then i found out the sad truth, but at least we do not have the
nismo co's decal on our car!! ;)

Reminds of the GT-SS Mustang I saw at an informal carshow here in Colorado last
Summer...bastardizing the "SS" from a <gAsP> Camaro.

Why not, I have 2.3 on mine. Same style, size, and decimal point in between.
Cost about 40 bucks to have made.
