I need to replace my clutch, and am looking for some opinions on which one to
go with. A friend of mine said the best clutch he's used was the King Cobra,
and he's used many.
Anyone else recommend it? My car is pushin about 375-400 RWHP.
Thanks.

When I went shopping for a new clutch, I called D&D Performance in Wixom, MI
248-926-6220 I was wanting the King Cobra clutch also and they sell a Heavy
Duty Clutch, they said it wasn't the King Cobra but it was an excellent clutch.
They said they have had problems with the King Cobra clutches. But I am just
relaying what they said. I haven't had experience with King Cobra. This HD
clutch grabs great though. Hell, mine won't disengage it grabs so good. LOL I
have a new clutch cable and quadrant on the way though.

The guys at Saleen recommended a King Cobra pressure plate with a
Centerforce dual friction clutch disk. I also saw the same combination
recommended several other noteworthy places. I installed them on my 95GT
behind a Motorsport billet flywheel and really love the combination. It is
VERY easy to modulate, has reasonable pedal effort, and is rated for over
500hp.

I have a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch and pressure plate on my
blown '98 Cobra. It costs a little more than some of the others, but
it's well worth the money. The holding power is excellent and the
pedal effort is less than the stock setup. I've had no problems at
all with it.

I researched several pressure plates and talked with Centerforce
engineering. The Centerforce pressure plate is designed to have the same
pedal effort as stock.

In my opinion, the King Cobra sucks. Don't waste your money.

Hey George, yes the Cobra went 11's. Sorry, it was a joke, but maybe not a
real good one. +ADs- )

I haven't been reading RAMFM much lately either.

That is what they tell people; rather than say theirs has *less*
pedal effort than stock, I think they let the results speak for
themselves. I know that this was the very first thing I noticed when
driving my car after the installation.

At first I thought maybe it wasn't set up right or something, but SVC
said this is one of the reasons why they recommend Centerforce.
They've had other customers tell them the same thing.

I've been trying to get my wife to learn how to drive a stick, and
after the install, I remember telling her it would be easier with this
clutch.

Is your flywheel aluminum or steel? Do you see any difference in
"recovery" ( I think it's called) after a gear change? What did you
pay for it?

It's steel. I used steel because I saw what happened to a car whose cast
iron flywheel cracked and exploded. It was like a buzz saw almost cut off
the front of the car. For a little extra money it was big insurance against
losing me or the car. The going price for the Motorsport billet flywheel is
$220.

OK, but what if I told you my LX chirps fourth, on slicks, when I
powershift? It does. Doesn't really mean anything though. My LX has a stock
clutch, and a stock engine.

I smoked two King Cobras in less than two months in my Cobra. It's just not
strong enough for a 3625 lb car that made 444 rwhp. This was on drag
radials.

For that HP level, I would not go with a KC. I have a KC in my 84.
Bought it when they first came out 6 years ago. I love the thing, but
I'm only pushing 283HP. It's a great *street* clutch for stock or
mildly modified engines. The reduced pedal effort is amazing (my wife
is after me to put one in the 88 LX). Yet, when you start pushing the
level of HP that you claim you have, it's better to go with another
clutch besides the KC. Centerforce is one that comes to mind.
