Some earlier ('96, '97) GTs (and even some '96 Crown Vics) with the 4.6l SOHC V8
would experience a manifold failure around where the alternator mounted to the
intake manifold.
Symptoms included spraying antifreeze out as fast as one could put in liquid to
replace that running out, to engine death in the case of the engine ingesting
antifreeze.
If the engine ingests antifreeze it can glaze the cylinders to the point the rings
don't seal. An engine teardown with either at least new pistons, rings, and a
re-honing of the cylinders to break the glaze or if too much material would have to
be removed, a rebore and oversized pistons/rings fitted is called for.
Best your friend parks the car until he figures out the problem and gets it fixed.
Oh, for some GT owners who's engines suffered this problem, Ford extended the
warranty to 7 years, 100,000 miles (I think it was 100,000 miles) so your friend's
car may be covered.
I hope so...
BTW, it cost my Dad around $500 to have his Crown Vic's intake manifold replaced
when it went out after less than 60,000 miles.
My '96 GT manifold was replaced under warranty when it failed around 36,000 miles.
Sincerely,
MarcW.
