Have a friend with a 98 stang with over 85,000 miles on car. It originally
popped check engine light on and car was missfiring real bad. Ran the codes and
it showed random misfire. reset the puter after replacing plugs and car ran
fine for a while. Now its doing it again 200 miles later. Can smell antifreeze
burning in exhaust but its not bubbling in resivoir like a head gasket
leak.Talked to another ford tech and he said that 4.6l engines are warping the
intakes and Ford is just advising to replace them. They are supposed to leak
antifreeze into the cylinders and short outthe plugs. Has anyone else run into
this problem? and wondering if I jus replace the intake manifold will this
cure the problem as Ford tech sometimes this doesnt do it

If anti-freeze makes its way into the cylinders you'll see white smoke
coming out of the tailpipe. That's the surest way to determine if
antifreeze is leaking. I'm pretty sure though that ford issued an extention
to their warrenties with the GTs regarding the intake manifolds just like
they did the V6s for their head gaskets, so I'd take a closer look at your
options first before coughing up the money to have it repaired.

There is a recall out on them. My brother had a 96 GT that sprayend
anti-freeze all over...so you may want to check that avenue. Also I got a
notice on my 2k GT that I may get contacted by Ford in mid-January as some cars
are having problems with not letting water pass though the heater core and
nulling any defrost functions. Not a good thing with this winter!

Some earlier ('96, '97) GTs (and even some '96 Crown Vics) with the 4.6l SOHC V8
would experience a manifold failure around where the alternator mounted to the
intake manifold.

Symptoms included spraying antifreeze out as fast as one could put in liquid to
replace that running out, to engine death in the case of the engine ingesting
antifreeze.

If the engine ingests antifreeze it can glaze the cylinders to the point the rings
don't seal. An engine teardown with either at least new pistons, rings, and a
re-honing of the cylinders to break the glaze or if too much material would have to
be removed, a rebore and oversized pistons/rings fitted is called for.

Best your friend parks the car until he figures out the problem and gets it fixed.

Oh, for some GT owners who's engines suffered this problem, Ford extended the
warranty to 7 years, 100,000 miles (I think it was 100,000 miles) so your friend's
car may be covered.

I hope so...

BTW, it cost my Dad around $500 to have his Crown Vic's intake manifold replaced
when it went out after less than 60,000 miles.

My '96 GT manifold was replaced under warranty when it failed around 36,000 miles.

Sincerely,

MarcW.

It has unlimited mileage coverage, mine had 125k when it blew.

This problem is not it the databases. The extended warranty coverage
for this problem is Ford Service Program Number 97M91. All Ford
dealers are aware of it.

Take Care,

Mark
