Will a 302 fit in a Volvo P1800?

I saw a real nice wagon P1800 at Pomona, but the owner was not there and the
hood was closed so I could not examine the available real estate for a 5.0
swap. I have always had a jones for one of these. Anybody see one with a
V8?

I can't say that I've seen one, but for some reason an aluminum Buick 215 swap
sounds familiar to me.

I know on the Buick215 list they like to put them in Triumphs and other stuff
like that.

How about a P1800 wagon and a hemi crate motor... your own "hemi under glass."

The following website is all about putting a 302 into 240 series Volvos:
http://hometown.aol.com/volv8/index.html

However, the P1800S and P1800ES (the wagon) don't have nearly the engine
compartment space of the 240s. I wrenched on my parents Volvos and there
just isn't the depth necessary in the Ps. They are more along the lines
of a Triumph or Datsun 1600/2000. You might be able to wedge a Buick 215
or something in there but that's about it.

Unless you wanna go mid-engine conversion on the ES. Which would be
really cool :).

I would say it was possible - they've got 5.0s in Miatae and then the old
Sunbeam Tiger.
But, you'd probably be better off getting a Buick 215 or something for it.

just like a Cleveland. You know what a Cleveland is, don't you? Lessee,
the stock CFI intake will take a 650 Holley two barrel (same bolt
pattern), and even a small 302 blower will work real well with those
ports....

And those engines are cheap and plentiful.

When the 1800 first came out in 1962, there were some great California gear heads
that loved the car but were
not really impressed with the Volvo 1800cc 4 cylinder. So....They stuffed in a
289HiPo out of the falcon (?).
Remember, the mustang was still 2 years away !

They had to really cut up the firewall to shoehorn it in and had to flip one of
the exhaust manifolds (drivers side ?)
to the front and reroute the pipes ! It is rumored that the President of Volvo
North America was allowed to drive the
car and we almost had the Volvo Cobra !

All of this is from memory, but I do have a copy of the original magazine article
from 1962 retailing around somewhere
at home. If there is more interest I will dig it out.

The Buick 215 has become the Rover 3.5L and now the Ranger Rover 4.0.
So electronic fuel injected versions are available.

Also Kennedy adapters makes an adapter so you can hook a T5 tranny to
the back of a Buick 215.
I have seen hot rod magazine articles on taking the Buick out to 300
cubic inches. A 300 pound 300 cubic inch engine, sorta makes you go
hmmmmm.

wonder if it's the same guy who was interviewed in Car & Driver who
specialized in putting 302s into Volvos, he did 1 for Paul Newman and
supposedly his kit was very inexpensive.

Thanks for all the responses. Cobra Jet's V6 idea was my backup, and I have
been thinking about the V6 for a 65 Mustang or Comet wagon. Economical,
peppy and overdrive. The Buford 215 is also an idea, I have a few old Hot
Rod mags of that period showing tech info, and one Falcon swap. It is
something I have kicked around, and I am now seriously looking for the Next
Project. The 58 is ready for sale/barter, and I have a new vehicle for
twisting purposes only. What is it? It is NOT Ford, and you sure as hell
know that if it is me, it is not new. I was sure surprised at myself when I
wrote the check, because for many years I saw this car only as prey.

What could it be?

Anyway, I think I will delve further into the P1800 issue, as the car is
just so sexy. Emphasis on Ford power, natch. I am also considering a 50's
Lincoln, a late 30's sedan or a 61/63 T-bird with a 400 and tuned-port SEFI.
(The engine is a personal challenge sort of thing). Anyway, I'm looking
around.

Thanks again.

I love the 58, but I need to consolidate. The wagon is getting old, the
Montego is a gas hog, and I don't have a lot of room. Who knows what I will
run across.

I hung out with the 58 at the Blessing of the Cars on Saturday. A lot of
cool cars there. Gets me thinking. There was one other 60's style drag
car, a 56 Chev, but it was a work in progress, not a gen-U-wine battle sedan
like mine. The 4.56's are calling to me...

Woohoo! We're talking Buicks!... even if it ain't 455's.

That Hot Rod mag was from the mid 80's. They got 305 cubes out of one using a
300 crank offset ground, I think. Also used the 64 300 aluminum heads. I
think they had, at the time, recommended the ford 2.3 turbo pistons too.

But, many of the articles have been put on websites by guys in the 215 list, if
I'm not mistaken. It seems like someone else from the group was on the list.
Was it you, Erich?

No. I never got on the list, but I was doing research for a street legal
dune buggy project. The project has been shelved until the kids get
older but a guy can still dream, Right?
