Here's my questions:
First, I expect there to be a few '97's on the lots when the '99 Cobra's are
released due to trade-in's (notice I didn't say "trade-up" because that's still
debatable). But what would motivate someone to trade in a '97 Cobra with 11k
miles on it now? I can think of two reasons: (1) it's a lemon or (2) it was
traded in for a ragtop. Anyone have any other ideas?
Second question is what do you think is a fair price for it? '98's are
stickering for $26,300. I'm thinking maybe $22k? Oh, and here's what the
Kelly Blue Book is worth - they said resale retail is $27,000 for the '97.
Duh! I wish they had N.A.D.A. online. KBB is sometimes useless at t*ts on a
boar.
Well thanks for the info y'all.

Here is my suggestion: Get on I-25. Drive to Denver. Get a new 98
Cobra
for what they are asking for that 97. Call Courtesy Ford (sorry, I
don't
have their number handy)

Lost his/her drivers license. Lost his job. Couldn't afford the

A quick glance at the Rocky Mountain New (http://www.insidedenver.com/)
shows
that Denver dealers are asking 22K for a car such the one in question.

Got Married. Baby on the way. Repo.
If you are really interested, have a reuptable shop take a look at it.
Buyers inspections are inexpensive.....
$24K? You could almost get a '98 Cobra (brand new, with ~0 miles) for almost
that little if you sat there and argued with the guy enough. I'm sure some
fool will still buy it, though.
Traded on a Vette or Viper, Drug bust seizure, used in a crime, General
Manager's Car.
You name it.
Oh and that is waaaaay to overpriced.

KBB is full of crap in most cases. Try http://www.edmunds.com Granted, the
dealers have their own little books they use to determine trade in and
retail values. By the way, the NADA books available from Barnes & Noble etc.
are the "Consumer Edition" which ony lists retail values for cars and not
wholesale or trade in values. What a scam they have going. Dealers publish
the prices they sell their cars for and then advertise the prices as
accurate. It's kind of like me hacking into the human resources computer at
work and giving myself a raise.
And by the way, the used Cobras (and new ones too) down here aren't selling
nearly as well as the sales people would like you to believe. This may be
the case where you are as well. Try to talk them down on price.

Go to your bank or credit union. They probably have copies of the NADA
book for you to peruse. Warning: Even the NADA trade in value is often
higher than the going retail price.
Frank
I'll second that statement. I think KBB is really in bed with the dealers,
i.e. trying to make you think the initial price posted by a dealer is fair.
I wouldn't give 'em a dime over 22K for that 97. Average mileage and all.
Start at 21K.
Did you mean that the NADA trade in value is often higher than the going
*wholesale* price? I assume no dealer will give you retail for your car
unless he's really sticking it to you on the new car you're buying.
Dennis
What I meant is that if you look in the Sunday paper, the price that
dealer and individuals are asking for some cars is actually lower
than the NADA trade in value (only some models).
The truth is that there are too many late model used cars on the
market, and this depresses prices.
Frank

Thought he'd try a "sporty car", but found out it was too much for him?
Decided that he'd much rather blend in with the minivan crowd? Too shy, and
didn't like all the attention he was getting? Or, a female who got tired of
all the guys hitting on her. Or someone who saw the new Beetle and thought,
"Now, there's a cute looking car!"
:()
That's still to much. I believe Carmax is a scam as well. The are one of
those "no haggle dealers" who claim to give good prices as high as $1000
under NADA retail. I have one here where I live in Boynton Beach Florida and
also have visited the Carmax's in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami Florida.
What they never mention is that they ask the same price most traditional
type dealers ask for thier cars. The only catch is that Carmax won't haggle
on price when traditional dealers will. Who do you think will have a lower
price? Carmax who won't budge off the $20,000 price tag, or a traditional
dealer who drops the price below $20,000 really fast when you threaten to
walk.
They also claim to have less pressure situations and better dealer fees than
traditional dealers. They don't. Don't believe their lies. They rely on the
uneducated consumer to come in a buy a car from them under the belief that
they will get fairer treatment and a better price.
Don't expect a good deal on your trade from Carmax either. They appraised my
1990 LX with 102,000 miles for $1500 towards a $14,000 1996 Mustang GTS. Now
several other traditional dealers appraised my LX at $3500- $4000 trade in
towards a $18,900 1996 Cobra. Carmax is a scam that feeds on the uneducated
consumer.
There's also a web site (price quote or price something...) that you can
name your price and they'll go out and find your car at that price for
you. There's a few strings attached, but it might be worth
investigating.

I have to agree. No-haggle dealing usually means you get screwed every time.
Why should the dealer haggle in those cases. BTW, most no-haggle dealers will
still negotiate, if you want. I still think that the only way to get a really
good price is to negotiate prices. Some folks get really screwed by the deal
so those of us who negotiate can walk away happy. It all evens out for the
dealer in the end.

25k? Well that's probably right. I just look on the yellow sticker on the

I live on the west side of Kirtland.
Some people are never satisfied with Anything. I used to be that way. The
longest I ever kept a car was 3 years and 33000 miles. I'm currently trying
to break out of that habit. The shortest I ever had a car was 8 months and
7400 miles ('95 IROC-Z with 5sp & L69).
I've had the following:
'80 Mustang 3sp Auto I6 Hatchback (my first NEW car).
'83 Mustang GT 5sp Manual Hatchback
'84 Dodge Daytona Turbo 5sp
'85 Camaro IROC-Z 5sp. Manual (vapor lock special)

'87 Mustang GT 5sp Manual Hatchback, lowered, 5-bolt, 15x8 Centerlines (wish

'87 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.0L V6 3sp Auto (3 years/33000 miles)
'88 Mustang LX 5.0 5sp Hatchback
'89 Vette 4 sp Auto (wish I still had it. Wonderful suspension, magic.)

I can beat that. I bought a new '85 Corvette and once a month I ran it
up to see how fast I could get it to go (153 mph). I also gutted the
converter and ditched the mufflers in favor of a couple of aftermarket
resonators so it was *loud*. After six months and 5k miles, the novelty
wore off and I got rid of it. Never put a plate on it because of the
high excise tax (used my old car's).
But I, too, have changed. I currently own a vehicle I bought new in '92
that now has over 82,000 miles on it.
D.
The last time I went to Evergreen Ford in Issaquah, WA, they had about 6 brand
new Cobras in several colors, and a convertible on the lot. One of the new
ones was priced down to around $24,500. It's been a couple months since I was
there, though.

I don't see many if any used Cobras on Ford lots. (I do see new Cobras, for my
travels take me by a few Ford dealers around the area -- there are off hand I'd say
around 6 or 7 within a 20 mile radius of my house.)
Where I see lots of Ford Cobras, Saleens (well, one) and other hot (?) Detroit iron
is on BMW, Mercedes Benz, and Jag used car lots.
Used Cobras are not being traded in for new Cobras, but for new BMWs, Mercedes, or
Jags. Oh, and check out the dealers selling the most SUVs/trucks in town.
It is on these used car lots you'll find nice used late model Cobras. I've seen
nice used late model Camaros, Firebirds too.
Sincerely,
MarcW.

Just this AM driving by local Ford dealer and saw what I at first
thought was a '98 Cobra, white.
U-turned and came back and parked. Got my notebook out and walked over
to car. It's a '96 Cobra, with an excellent body, 14,000+ miles, 3
months/3,000 mile warranty offered by dealer, with a $100 deductible on
repairs, but 100% parts/labor.
Car has all the Cobra goodies including premium sound (CD player) and
premium tires/wheels. Tires look real good, lot's of tread still left.
ABS, all leather, power door locks/windows, A/C, cruise control. It's a
5-speed and I was under the impression cruise control only came with
automatics. Learn something everyday, if I'm not careful...
Dealer was closed but I think (reading between the numbers on the
windshielf stickers) the dealer's asking $25K for this baby. Sure looks
nice, and is my favorite color (white) and has low miles but I think
$25K is a might high...
If it were a little later in the year, I might be tempted, but just got
hit with a tax bill from '96 along with penalty and interest. It doesn't
pay to make math errors with the IRS...
Couple of new V6 and GT Mustangs on the lot. $22,000+ sticker price.
Looks like the GTs have Goodyear 'H' rated tires too, not the 'Z' rated
ones...
Sincerely,
MarcW.
I'm not in the market just yet for a Cobra. I'm still p*ssed at Ford for
all the problems my '96 GT has given me. Also, I'm waiting to see what
other cars come out. The Audi TT looks pretty good, the Corvette
hardtop, and the new Z3 coupe with the 2.8l six, the Lincoln LS8 (though
I think this comes with an auto only -- yeecch), even the new T-bird.
I may still end up replacing my GT with a Cobra (a new or good used one)
but I'm going to do some serious shopping/comparing first.
Sincerely,
MarcW.

I noticed today, while riding the bus past Evergreen, there was a red '96 in
the used car lot. If they're only asking $24,000 for a convertible, what would
a '96 Cobra go for??
Except the sunshine. I lived up in Tacoma for a couple years and had to get
out because I couldn't stand the rain! Other than that, it's great. The
people are really friendly, lots to do, etc.

I've lived all over the country and bought cars in 3 different states in the
past 3 years. Trust me if you want a deal on a Cobra go to the East Coast. I
could've bought my car there for at least 2K less.

Hey dammit, it's been sunny for weeks, we were even into the mid 90's this
year! So why don't you just shut the f@$k up. You're lucky I'm so bored that
I can't get up from this computer, dammit.

Uh oh, you know what that means......the rain is coming and it won't stop for

The eternity started today somewhere between the time I got on the bus for
work, and got off work. (It was sunny when I went to get lunch though).
