This one is causing me a lot of grief so here is my cry for help....
1997 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer
1) The right side headlight does not work.
2) The right side hi beam does work.
2) The fog lights do not work either.
I know the headlight bulb is good - I switched it the the left
and the problem stays on the right side. There is a fuse that
is common to both the right side headlight and the fog lamp relay.
This fuse (#8) is good. I have verified the wiring is good from
the plug at the headlight to the plug going through the firewall.
I have applied power to the firewall end of the headlight wire
and the headlight comes on. I have no continuity from the fuse
to the firewall plug. I have been unable to follow the wire
from the fuse panel to the fire wall. It gets lost in a large
wiring harness. There should be a connection to the fog lamp
relay but I cannot locate that either. I suspect a broken
connection or a contact problem somewhere under the dash.
Here is the wiring diagram I am working from with the circuit
of interest highlighted in red: http://www.esysdev.com/ExplorerWiring.jpg
Has anybody seen a problem like this before ?
Does anybody know where the fog lamp relay is and what it looks like ?
If I could find it, I could check the wiring from there to the firewall
plug and the fuse panel.

Any ideas or pointers would be appreciated...

You may have to break down, pay money, and have a professional look at it?

I assume you have the message center, and if so, there is a Lamp Out Module
(LOM) wired to this computer. The solder joints are known to come lose in
this module. Had the same experience on my '97 Eddie Bauer, with the
exception that it was the left low beam (high beams worked). As a matter of
fact, last night I had to pull the message center out and reconnect the LOM
(after I checked all the fuses) to the computer because I had no exterior
lights at all! Appears that when I had the LOM changed at the shop, they
didn't snap in the harness all the way, and it worked its way lose. The fog
lamp is also probably related to this module, just because this module seems
to control all exterior light (w/exception of brake lights), and if you were
to remove this module, you would end up with no exterior lamps, just like I
experience last night.

Good Luck!!!

First thing to do is get a test light and check for power at the head lamp.
If the headlamp and the fog lamp share a common ground you may be looking in
the wrong place. You need to be sure of what your getting here - since a
poor ground might have the high beam illuminating through an "unauthorized"
ground.

This fix worked for me! As a matter of fact, mine was a case of a loose
cold solder joint where the input wires attached to the circuitboard. If
you crack the LOM module to expose and remove the board, you can check for
shorts at loose joints or those that have any indication of burn caused by a
short around them. If you trust your soldering skills, it's a self fix
(mine wasn't the prettiest soldering job but it did the trick."

Thanks to both car...@bellatlantic.net and jgh...@mtu.edu for the info.....
(no thanks to the guy who said pay money, and have a professional look at)
I had a Chilton book on Ford Explorers which had simplified (inaccurate)
wiring diagrams with no mention of a Lamp Out Module (LOM).
I got lucky at a local library and found a Mitchell Electrical Repair
Manual which had complete wiring diagrams including the Lamp Out Module.
After a littel digging, I found the LOM was under the cup holders in the
Instrument Console. I pulled the LOM out and saw the right head lamp
circuit had no continuity. After a closer look I could see a cracked
solder joint between the connector and circuit board. I re-soldered all of
the connector pins since they all were a little light on solder. After
that, the head lights and fog lights worked fine !
Thanks again carrol4 and jgholt !
I have pictures of the module if anybody is interested...just email me.

Dan.

Dan, I would like to get the pictures of the lom if you still have them. I didn't notice your email address but mine is flsupe...@gmail.com.
Thanks, I hope I hear from you,
Mark
