My Expl.XLT 4wd has a problem with high altitudes 7kfeet + - the engine check
light comes on especially in slow motion down hill and the motor sometimes
stops.

Has anybody else seen this?

It sounds like it could be an oxygen sensor problem. When they go bad they make
the check engine light go on and off. If it only goes on and off under certain
conditions it may be one going bad. Their should be a stored error code in the
computer after the check engine light comes on if you can get the code it will
indicate what caused the check engine light to come on(this can take away the
guess work). A bad oxygen sensor can cause a wide range of engine performance
problems one of which is the engine idling rough and stoppping. If you have
more than 30,000 miles on the your Explorer it may require changing. I had a
simaler problem with my 94 XLT 4wd at 21,000 miles. I took it in to a service
center and they replaced both oxygen sensors after checking the error code.
That took care of the problem I'm at 29,000 and have not had any more trouble
since.
