As a longtime troubleshooter/technician type, I
usually take the easy/cheap approach first. Since
the flasher unit is very cheap and easy to replace,
I would try it first.
Good luck!

Here is how to get to the switch (from memory...someone correct me if I
miss something).
First, unscrew the tilt steering handle and remove it. Then use a Torx
driver to remove three screws from the bottom of the steering column.
The plastic cover on the bottom of the steering column should just come
right off. Screw the tilt steering handle back in and adjust the tilt
until you can get the top part of the cover partway off (you don't have
to take it all the way off). There should be three more Torx screws (a
larger size, I think) holding the multi-function switch to the steering
column. Take those out, and then it will be held on only by two wiring
harnesses. Use a flat screwdriver to carefully pop those off. Then you
can either take the switch apart and clean it or replace it with a new
one. As I said, I had to do both (which is why I can remember the steps
to get to the switch).
Best of Luck!
Search this forum with something like Google and you should find the
original thead I found that helped me fix mine. It is not difficult. There
are about 3 or 4 screws that hold on the covers on the steering column, and
then some torx screws on the switch itself. The hardest part was getting
the connector off the switch. Make sure you follow appropriate safety steps
since you are working around the airbag, etc. etc. I think the switch was
$50 something plus tax.
