'96 fuel gauge - no warning light

The gas gauge has a warning light (that looks like a gas pump) that
should light up when the fuel is getting low. Unfortunately I haven't
seen this warning light come on, since my last trip to the dealer for
warranty work. During that visit, I reported to the dealer that the
gauge was not registering low fuel correctly on the needle. Even tho
they reported they could not find anything wrong, I suspect they did
something because now the gauge registers the fuel better now, but the
warning light doesn't glow. (I do get the "Check gauge" light at the
top of the dash)

The tank holds 21 gallons. I filled it up today with 19.2 gallons.
But I got no gas pump warning light... just the "Check gauge" warning.
I guess I shouldn't worry about such a minor thing, but I've heard
others here talk about problems with their fuel gauges not registering
correctly, etc.

Can we get a dialog going here on the problems people have experienced
with their fuel gauges and what was done to fix the problem(s)?

Regards,
Ken

On my 95' Explorer EB, the check guage light IS the low gas warning light.
It is written in red. There is no picture of a gas tank. I also have the
computer which tells me how many miles left.... which is VERY helpful.

I was wondering about this on my truck. Do the '93's have the low fuel
warning light? cause either they don't, or mine doesn't work. I have the
EB if that makes a difference.

I've always been under the impression that one of the CHECK GAGE light
situations is a low fuel warning. Never seen a separate "low fuel"
indicator.

I have the '96 4.0 and my guage will suddenly drop to empty when three to four
gallons of fuel are left in the tank. The check guage warning light comes on.
This was annoying at first, but it will probably keep me from running the tank
out of gas by thinking I can make it just a little further to that next
station. My only concern is I'm not sure the guage is consistent in doing
this. I don't want to be thinking that I've got three or four gallons of fuel
left on a tank thats only one gallon away from going dry.

I've had four explorers--91,94,96 xlt's and now a 98EB. As I recall, the 91
had no low fuel warning, seems like the 94 had a red "fuel low" light on the
dash ( might be wrong about this ), the 96 had a "check guage" light on the
dash that was triggered buy low fuel (and other things). Message center
equipped trucks (EB's and limiteds 95 and newer I believe) have extensive
fuel info. But the point is, the fuel gages on all four of my trucks have
worked the same. They show and increase in fuel after the truck has sat in
the sun for awhile. They show an increase when acclerating and a decrease
when braking. These fluctuations seem to be magnified when the gage reaches
1\4 tank and are barely noticeable above 1\2 tank. I believe this is normal
and I could say the same thing about any vehicle I have ever owned. The
volume of fuel in the tank expands and contracts with the outside air temp.
and the fuel gage doesn't compensate for this. For example: you park the
truck after a warm day with 1\4 tank showing on level ground. Overnight,
the outside air temp. drops significantly, say 15-30 degrees. You go out in
the morning and start the truck and BAM! your fuel has dropped below 1\4
tank, maybe even low enough to trigger low fuel warning. This is not a
malfunction, simply a change in fuel volume due to temperature.

Ken. You have the same year and model as I have. I have never been able to pump
more than 19.5 gallons. Are you sure you have been able to pump more than 20
gallons at a time. Sometimes I drive on fumes and really cut it close.

Larry,

The 19.2 gals is the most I have filled it with. I haven't had the
guts to go much further, without running the risk of running out of
fuel.

Scott,

Thanks for your thoughts. I too have noticed these inconsistences in
the guage reading, particularly during the last third to quarter of a
tank. I guess it's just nature of the beast... maybe(?).

I have a feeling that temp changes cause the fuel in the tank to
expand and contract which directly affects the gauge reading. The
tank is a "closed" system, in that the fuel cap must be on tight or it
will cause your "Check Engine" light to come on. I suspect this is
what we are experiencing.

I'm so accustomed to other vehicles' fuel gauge reading the same when
I get home in the evening and when I go to work the next morning. A
quarter of a tank (or less) can read differently many times thoughout
the day on this Explorer. Might have to live with it.

Have a 97 XLT v6 - within days of purchase found that the fuel guage
did not pass the 1/4 mark no matter how much gas was put in. Sent it
back to the dealer and problem seemed to have been fixed. Just ran out
of gas 2 weeks back - seems fuel guage, this time, stuck on the 1/4
mark. Whilst waiting for next occasion to visit dealer - difficult
here in Malaysia due various reasons - am following mileage via trip
meter. So far so good. As pissed of as I am about having this problem
with a new car, am also finding it kind of fun paying more attention
to the mileage , the fuel consumption and not being dependant on the
fuel guage.
