I have a 1994 explorer Auto trans, with 100,000 miles. Recently the
transmission will not shift out of first gear until ~40 mph or if I let off
the gas pedal at ~20mph. It seems to then skip 2nd gear and go directly to
third. All other shifts are normal. Second gear is still there if I manually
shift it down to second from third, but then upon acceleration the engine
will rev high and shift back down first and hold first again.

I'm looking for any troubleshooting advice before I bring it to the shop and
they quote me big bucks to fix it.

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm sure you'll get better answers from the more knowledgable people
here, but I am the proud (?) owner of a '91 that had the same type
problems.

Mine did the same thing, wouldn't shift out of first (didn't have the
prob w/2nd, tho). Found a guy on the net who said it was a
governor-operated slide valve in the rear case of the tranny - he
fixed it by opening the case and polishing the valve so it didn't
stick. My mechanic said he could do it for $300-$500 but I let it
slide.

I hand-hifted it for a year and a half until finally (I believe it
was) the torque converter went out and I had it rebuilt. BTW, I
think high revving could be the torque converter "slipping".

The guy at the tranny shop said he does a lot of these, they are
apparently notoriously weak trannies. It cost me $1800. (Lot of money
but I only paid $3500 for the truck). Make sure you ask if they
intend to install the upgrade kit.

I recently had the same problem with my 94 explorer at about the same
mileage. I took it to a mechanic I really trusted (also my flight
instructor). He changed the fluid, it was really junky, and the problem was
better. Then he put in some conditioner (I don't know what it was but could
find out for you). That and another fluid change and it works as good as new
now.

That helped with my '91 - it took about a month of driving after the
fluid change, then it finally must have managed to clean the valve
bodies enough for them to work. Unfortunately, after another few
months it was back to sticking in first.

Reading this thread must have put a hex on me because just this week
my 1994 Explorer with160,000kms has done something similar but with a
twist.

When starting from cold my explorer when in drive will start in 1st
and stay there for about a mile then will change up normally. The
transmission will change into second in that first mile if I change
manually to second but goes back into 1st if I shift back to drive
position. After reaching the one mile approx mark the transmission
operates normally.

When I first noticed this problem my mechanic checked the transmission
and noticed burnt smell in the oil and suggested that an oil flush may
fix the problem or it will be a rebuild. We did the oil flush and the
symptoms have not changed in the last two days.

My question is - is this likely to clear up or are there any further
areas to check before the rebuild.

TIA

Just a thought.... but is your speedometer acting at all funny?

and once it does shift into 2nd, do the 4x4 lights blink?

Hmm - I am not sure if the last post was tongue in cheek however I
consider my explorer's problems may be similar to the original posters
but the problem only occured within the first mile or so of driving.

The transmission changes normally after this.

Sounds like the shift valve body going south. Mine went and destroyed the
internals.
Had to replace the tranny @ 24K miles!

It sounds like a sticking governor to me. That is relatively easy to fix and
should not be very expensive.

I'm gonna put my zero cents in here and after reading the symptoms of
the original post which you quoted.... Try the Modulator hose.... My
truck does this about once a year and all I have to do is put the hose
back on the modulator.

Tranny replaced on 94 4×4 explorer,no power going uphill, engine lite turns on bogs out?before this, tranny fluid was going in oil?changed modulator for that, runs good otherwise.
