Hey Guys,
Right now The Ford Explorer name is is getting dragged thru the mud.
With all the recalls and then the situation with Firestone.
It's valve is going down as we speak....trade now!
Went the dealer to trade in my 01' Explorer Sport w/prem. Sport package and
only got $17,600.
The base price for this car is about 23,000 and with the sport group upped
mine to 26,000.
Look how much money I lost! Always been a Ford Man (20 years) , not anymore!
Hurry your time is running out! By the same token if you really want a new
Explorer then you can work the dealer big time!
Well got to go and Drive my New Isuzu Trooper down the California mountains.
This SUV beat the hell out of my EXplorer...too smooth on the highway and
off-road its a dream.
Take care people, good luck in your life, RoLLin'

I am waiting for the Explorer name to take such a beating that Ford will
offer a loyalty rebate for us poor bastard Explorer owners to purchase
another Ford/Mercury product. I love my truck BUT there is no way I can sell
it at what USED to be a FMV.

Uh, yeah. Usually you lose a lot of money if you trade in your car at the
dealer rather than sell it privately.

Thats why it set a June sales record? There is absolutely nothing wrong with
the Ford Explorer. The only problem is most of the soccer moms driving them
shouldn't even have a license. Just so you know I'm sure you could have sold
your Explorer for upwards of $22,000 if you would have done it privately.
Dealers are notorious for not using vaseline. Good luck with your Trooper
man I'll keep my 98 Explorer and buy another one in a couple more years.Keep
us informed on how it works for you.

If any one suggests that Explorer is safe, take a look underneath the wheel
well. On my wife's 2000 Explorer, the brake line is exposed in the wheel
well, attached to the body using a plastic clip (fell off when it was new,
had to buy a stainless tie to tie it to the truck frame). If under tire
explosion, the tire/radial wire will probably cut these brake line off - did
someone looked into these safety issue ? If not for Citibank offered the
$3000 credit toward the purchase of the truck, we would never look into
Ford, now I really regret trying to save the $3000 credit.

After looking a little into vehicle dynamic, I also suspect that Ford cut
corner at the shock and spring. Both are not rated high enough to suppress
the swaying motion during a high speed turning. I guess traditionally US
auto makers try to make the suspension soft, and the same to this Explorer
design. The suspension travel is just too high for such trucks with high
C.G. I am thinking about having these shocks replaced with stiffer damping
ratio type, probably do the same with the spring, if I can find a
progressive spring design such as OME spring designed for these trucks -
it's not a popular offroad type though.

If you paid $26k for an Explorer Sport with nothing but conv group (required
for:) and sport group, you got screwed unless its a 4x4 and you were a big
enough sucker to pay window sticker.

I agree, anyone that has bought a new explorer since 1999 has been forced to
grab their ankles.

I wouldn't exactly call the isuzu trooper a superior vehicle. Just merely
good enough.

If you want to buy an explorer, used is the way to go at this point.

Wow, you want me to name off a few thousand other cars that have brake lines
running in the same configuration?

The sway bars handle the sway, not the springs. Yeah, heavier springs
would have helped the sway, but it'd be a shitty solution for a vehicle not
primarally marketed to off-roaders. I agree, that the Explorer does need
heavier sway bars. My mexican-delivery '92 XLT (bought in Houston off a
dealer back lot, but supposbly made for mexico) has heavier than normal sway
bars and I can put it through turns that I wouldn't make even in the average
much shorter car.

Hey, want to make yourself sick?

Drive your "shiny new trooper " into a Ford dealer, and tell them you want
to buy a new Explorer.... Go ahead, let them write it up, and "work you"
Better bring some sniffing salts so that when they offer you $15k for the
trade in towards the purchase of the Explorer!

I don't want to sling mud at you, my friend but you are a Dealers (wet)
dream!

anybody who would trade in a brand new car, will get a whoopin, NO MATTER
THE BRAND.
I'm sure he used all the Dealer speak on you "Well ya know, these Explorers
are a drug on the market now, with all of the bad press... Ford is probably
gonna stop making them... I got 10 of them in the back lot that I can't
even sell, Had to sell 'em to a wholesaler... Well we *really* don't even
want the explorer as a trade, but I like you and I want you to have a
real safe car for you family... I really had to work my manager to get you
that much... I could get FIRED for even taking an explorer on trade"

sound familiar? thought so...

I'm sure it is true though that trade in value of the Explorer IS down.
Mostly because of the press, and because of people like you that panic, and
then let the dealer beat them up.. Kinda like when someone says "I heard
there was a gas shortage" and pretty soon, the lines are at the pumps (and
there is a shortage now!)...

Anyway, good luck with your Trooper. Personally I like the Rodeo's better.
they don't look like a square schoolbus!

(BTW, you should see how MANY Troopers run through the car auction Every
week!)

You took the most expensive route you could possibly take. Probably
even worse than leasing, and that's hard to do.

I still don't understand why some people think it's the truck and not the tire.

As far as I am concerned the tire's main job is to do 2 things: roll and bear
weight.( Also have traction but that's not the issue here.) What difference
does it make if you put a Firestone on an Explorer, a Honda, or a Cadillac.
It's still going to have to roll and bear weight. You don't have to be an
engineer to figure that one out.

press (take that with a grain of salt) hell dude they just suck .Look at
your EXplorer someday...really. You'll find cheap ass workmanship
everywhere.Quit lying to yourself or your family. You owe it to yourself.
My Trooper LS is a 2001 Model not a 87' model..so it doesn't look like
schoolbus.
It is however somewhat squared with classic euro front.Nice 10years/120,000
powertrain warranty.
I'll still have this "BUS" while you go thru 4 EXplorers (or what ever
Ford decides to call them after 03')
The Isuzu technology is so far advance to Ford's.So advance ,you could ( I
said could) use your 4X4 on dry pavement. Can EXplorer do
this....aaaaa.....NO!
http://www.isuzu.com/technology.htm this link will show you how far
advance this Company is in terms of their SUV's.I realize that talking about
another brand in EXplorer's NG won't make me any friends.I did leave myself
open to potshots at my Trooper LS.But that's ok I love it(the Trooper).
Cool , if you can get a Trooper at an auction more power to you. They last
forever( hence the warranty and faith in their product). But you'll have me
believe that buying a "me too" product with Exploding tires (I don't think
it all Firestone's fault) and other issues is a good thing.
I'm American thru and thru but if the Japs make better products (cars,
trucks, suv's) so be it.
WE (Americans) should strive to be better in our lives and what we sell our
people.
Ford is not being honest. You all deserve new Fords instead of the
EXploding...rrr..Explorer.
Go ahead take shots at my Trooper..take a look at the website...then go test
drive one.

Hey guys, come'on. Let's forget about this. Rollin' Bizit, congratulations on
your new vehicle and i'm glad to see that you're happy about it. However, i
don't think coming in here and telling people that they're gonna be rolling is a
good idea.
("Take care people, good luck in your life, RoLLin'").
Yes, i agree that the materials used in the Explorer may not be up to par at
times, but there are those that may not be as fortunate as you are, to have the
financial ability.
I bought my 95 Explorer just 6mnths ago, amidst all the Firestone fiasco. I
only see a vehicle for what it is, and refuse to be swayed by the media's
attempts to "tell the truth". So far, my vehicle has undergone one recall (sway
bar links), and i've replaced all the maintenance items at my discretion (normal
for a used vehicle). With the Eddie Bauer model, i have the luxury of leather,
computer, compass, power seats and climate control, plus i've invested in a
sound system that suits my taste and budget.
I've owned a 92 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL, 2 1995 Honda Civics, a 1995 Eagle Talon,
1993 Chrysler Concorde, a 2001 Honda Civic Ex and i still have my 1992 Nissan
Maxima SE. As you can see, most of my vehicles have been imports, with the
exception of 2. Comparing these vehicles with my 1995 EB, in my opinion, the
construction standards are all similar.
The Japanese makes aren't always a "hole in one" as seen with the 2001
Mitsubishi Montero and the 2001 Honda Civics. I sold my 2001 Honda Civic in a
private sale because:

a) In a span of 4 months, the car had its power steering pump and Powertrain
Control Module replaced.
b) The tachometer would hop around when the car was being cranked while cold.
c) The driver's seat had a rocking problem

The car went through one recall and one warranty repair. The tacho and seat
problems were deemed.....standard issue.
I am not saying that the Japanese automakers have horrible QC. I personally
feel that all manufacturers have their own quality issues; nobody can escape
from that.
Case in point: My brother's friend recently bought a 2001 Nissan Xterra. He
recently found out that the Xterra (equipped with a factory LSD) cannot pull
itself out of mud if the entire one side of the vehicle is in the mud. He had
to get a tow truck to pull him out. The vehicle has 5000kms, and already there
are signs of rust and paint flaws. His cruise control just died on him last
week. Upon shaking the cruise unit, there's obviously something broken in
there. Yes.....repaired under warranty, but the part has yet to come in via
"special order".
Notice that i make no mention of the Isuzu Trooper or you, purely because i
don't know you, or your vehicle. In return, i'd appreciate it if you'd refrain
from advising people to sell their vehicles, or that they owe it to themselves
to get something else. Whether or not i'm lying to myself or my family, is of
no concern to you. You don't know me.

Funny you should mention that. I saw a Mountaineer up on the rack a
few weeks ago, and the undercoated surfaces looked much neater than
the same areas on mine, which have a bit of surface rust. All
cosmetic, I think, but I did wish for an undercoat.

Not sure about a key under the dash, but I do have a $15 anti-theft
system under the dash. It's a digital voltmeter, which has three LED"S
that stay lit all the time. Sticks right in the accessory power
socket. It was given to me by my best friend, now sadly departed. As
soon as I saw it I figured that it would look scary to any of
society's disadvantaged who might otherwise want to mess with my ride
in the dark of night.

My friend had one too, and when he took his vehicle into the shop for
service the mechanic said 'your alarm system didn't go off while I
worked on it'.

>
>Oh, by the way, Hyundai has a 10yr / 100k warranty... does that make it a

Makes it worth considering if you are shopping for a car in that
class. Give them credit, I think, for offering such a warranty. I
suspect it is like long warranties of the past, probably 3 years
bumper to bumper and the remainder power train only.
