Uh, yeah. Usually you lose a lot of money if you trade in your car at the
dealer rather than sell it privately.
After looking a little into vehicle dynamic, I also suspect that Ford cut
corner at the shock and spring. Both are not rated high enough to suppress
the swaying motion during a high speed turning. I guess traditionally US
auto makers try to make the suspension soft, and the same to this Explorer
design. The suspension travel is just too high for such trucks with high
C.G. I am thinking about having these shocks replaced with stiffer damping
ratio type, probably do the same with the spring, if I can find a
progressive spring design such as OME spring designed for these trucks -
it's not a popular offroad type though.

I agree, anyone that has bought a new explorer since 1999 has been forced to
grab their ankles.
I wouldn't exactly call the isuzu trooper a superior vehicle. Just merely
good enough.
If you want to buy an explorer, used is the way to go at this point.

Wow, you want me to name off a few thousand other cars that have brake lines
running in the same configuration?

The sway bars handle the sway, not the springs. Yeah, heavier springs
would have helped the sway, but it'd be a shitty solution for a vehicle not
primarally marketed to off-roaders. I agree, that the Explorer does need
heavier sway bars. My mexican-delivery '92 XLT (bought in Houston off a
dealer back lot, but supposbly made for mexico) has heavier than normal sway
bars and I can put it through turns that I wouldn't make even in the average
much shorter car.

I would, there is nothing wrong with the explorer.

Hey, want to make yourself sick?
Drive your "shiny new trooper " into a Ford dealer, and tell them you want
to buy a new Explorer.... Go ahead, let them write it up, and "work you"
Better bring some sniffing salts so that when they offer you $15k for the
trade in towards the purchase of the Explorer!
I don't want to sling mud at you, my friend but you are a Dealers (wet)
dream!
anybody who would trade in a brand new car, will get a whoopin, NO MATTER
THE BRAND.
I'm sure he used all the Dealer speak on you "Well ya know, these Explorers
are a drug on the market now, with all of the bad press... Ford is probably
gonna stop making them... I got 10 of them in the back lot that I can't
even sell, Had to sell 'em to a wholesaler... Well we *really* don't even
want the explorer as a trade, but I like you and I want you to have a
real safe car for you family... I really had to work my manager to get you
that much... I could get FIRED for even taking an explorer on trade"
sound familiar? thought so...
I'm sure it is true though that trade in value of the Explorer IS down.
Mostly because of the press, and because of people like you that panic, and
then let the dealer beat them up.. Kinda like when someone says "I heard
there was a gas shortage" and pretty soon, the lines are at the pumps (and
there is a shortage now!)...
Anyway, good luck with your Trooper. Personally I like the Rodeo's better.
they don't look like a square schoolbus!
(BTW, you should see how MANY Troopers run through the car auction Every
week!)

Who made you do it?
You took the most expensive route you could possibly take. Probably
even worse than leasing, and that's hard to do.
Now you whine in a newsgroup about your stupidity and want others to
do the same?
Bah.
As far as I am concerned the tire's main job is to do 2 things: roll and bear
weight.( Also have traction but that's not the issue here.) What difference
does it make if you put a Firestone on an Explorer, a Honda, or a Cadillac.
It's still going to have to roll and bear weight. You don't have to be an
engineer to figure that one out.

a) In a span of 4 months, the car had its power steering pump and Powertrain
Control Module replaced.
b) The tachometer would hop around when the car was being cranked while cold.
c) The driver's seat had a rocking problem
The car went through one recall and one warranty repair. The tacho and seat
problems were deemed.....standard issue.
I am not saying that the Japanese automakers have horrible QC. I personally
feel that all manufacturers have their own quality issues; nobody can escape
from that.
Case in point: My brother's friend recently bought a 2001 Nissan Xterra. He
recently found out that the Xterra (equipped with a factory LSD) cannot pull
itself out of mud if the entire one side of the vehicle is in the mud. He had
to get a tow truck to pull him out. The vehicle has 5000kms, and already there
are signs of rust and paint flaws. His cruise control just died on him last
week. Upon shaking the cruise unit, there's obviously something broken in
there. Yes.....repaired under warranty, but the part has yet to come in via
"special order".
Notice that i make no mention of the Isuzu Trooper or you, purely because i
don't know you, or your vehicle. In return, i'd appreciate it if you'd refrain
from advising people to sell their vehicles, or that they owe it to themselves
to get something else. Whether or not i'm lying to myself or my family, is of
no concern to you. You don't know me.
I'm rolling the floor laughing my ass off now!..
Well, I just have to say, the intelligence you exude in your writing,
spelling, and general content makes it clear why you would take such a
beating... I bet you even got the undercoating, and the little security key
that plugs in under the dash, huh?
Oh, by the way, Hyundai has a 10yr / 100k warranty... does that make it a
better car than Mercedes??
You, Sir are a class act!
(who want's to bet He'll be posting a similar message in the Isuzu ng in 6
months when He trades it in"

Funny you should mention that. I saw a Mountaineer up on the rack a
few weeks ago, and the undercoated surfaces looked much neater than
the same areas on mine, which have a bit of surface rust. All
cosmetic, I think, but I did wish for an undercoat.
Not sure about a key under the dash, but I do have a $15 anti-theft
system under the dash. It's a digital voltmeter, which has three LED"S
that stay lit all the time. Sticks right in the accessory power
socket. It was given to me by my best friend, now sadly departed. As
soon as I saw it I figured that it would look scary to any of
society's disadvantaged who might otherwise want to mess with my ride
in the dark of night.
My friend had one too, and when he took his vehicle into the shop for
service the mechanic said 'your alarm system didn't go off while I
worked on it'.

Makes it worth considering if you are shopping for a car in that
class. Give them credit, I think, for offering such a warranty. I
suspect it is like long warranties of the past, probably 3 years
bumper to bumper and the remainder power train only.

But I only have, alas, two wheel drive.
