Absolutely loved my '90 Eclipse GSX (AWD), which except for cosmetics
was the same as a Talon that year. I think the rear limited slip
differential was optional on the Talon and standard on the Eclipse, but
the rest was badging. The guy I sold it to is a real gear head, and
uses it as his commuter.

Watch out for the timing belt. Change it every 40K miles unless you
like seeing bent and mangled valves. I got lucky at 40K and didn't bend
any, but I was at idle. At 93K . . . well it wasn't pretty.

There was a recall on the seal at the end of the tranny for the rear
shaft, IIRC. Mine never showed evidence of leaking, but some did. Look
for oil sprayed on the underbody around the forward end of the shaft.

The 145 MPH speedo is just about real. The car mags had it topping out
at 143. I can only vouch for 110, and it was very solid there.

Check out http://www.dsm.org. DSM is Diamond Star Motors, where the
Eclipse, Talon and Laser were built, in Normal, IL. DSM.org is where to
find Eclipse/Talon/Laser owners and lots of information.

IIRC, the 90-94s were pretty much the same, they made big changes in
'95, then again for '00. Unfortunately they stopped offering AWD. :-(

You should enjoy it, but find out how many miles are on the timing belt.

My friend's 1991 Talon required a new synchro for I think 2nd or 1st gear. The
part was redesigned because of it failing early. Luckily it was covered under
his powertrain warranty. I hear this is a common problem for that year anyways.

Heed the warning about timing belts. I've owned my 1990 Talon for 7 years,
driven it for 5, and I have been through 7 belts (seriously). Also beware of
who replaces them for you, its apparently a tricky job. I had one tech throw
his hands up in disgust and told me to take it somewhere else, and another
shop who did one that lasted about 4 months.

As low an opinion as I have of things Mitsubishi (not just the cars), I am
still amazed you are having these problems. It should not be that difficult
to change a timing belt correctly. I find myself wondering if perhaps one of
the idler wheels is bad, or there is a nick in one of the sprocket slots that
is tearing up the belts? It might warrant a thorough inspection by someone
who is whizbang at these engines.

Just a thought...

I'm on my 2nd Talon. 1st was a 91 NT. 2nd 97 FWD turbo. As everyone else has
said, take care of the timing belt. Check when it was changed last. If you
can't, have it changed as soon as possible. Although I lot of people don't
like SATAN (the dealer), I never had a problem with mine. The T-belt was
redesigned. Don't know if anyone other than DSM made that belt, so it may pay
to have a dealer change it, unless you can find a technician who specilizes in
DSM cars. If you do buy the car and can't find out when it was changed last,
get it done ASAP.

See if you can find out what type of oil was used in it. I never run anything
other than Mobil 1.

My 91 had 123K on it when I sold it. Was still on the original clutch and
exhaust.

My 97 has 75K miles on it already. My daily commute is 50 miles round
distance. I've cut down some on the miles, since my girlfriend moved in. We
have the mostly same hours at the same hospital.

I've also got a PT Cruiser on order and that will become our main vechile.

I ran a 90 TSi from new to 81K. The T belt was replaced free at 50K miles
through a DC recall. Never had a problem with the engine. In fact, the only
problem with the car was bad brake rotors.

Best car I ever owned! Good luck.
