Take my advice: stay away from that dealership at all costs. I have seen and
experienced too many things that only prove to me that they are at minimum
incompetent and, more likely, dishonest and negligent.
You may indeed have a problem with your transmission, but a "replacement" is
not an "overhaul" no matter how you look at it. Likely ('cause it's easiest
for them), they just want to pull out your tranny and put in a re-build.
If your car is still under warranty, find another dealer (I would recommend
Brampton Chrysler at Hwy 10 and Hwy 7 or Islington Chrysler on Dundas just
east of Hwy 427 in Etobicoke). If your car is out of warranty, find a good
independent mechanic or transmission specialist and forget the dealership
altogether.

Most likely so. Find out and tell us.
Sorry to hear about your problems.

Hi, Michael....
I'm really sorry to hear about your car problems. (Another one bites
the dust) If you've read my notes posted to this newsgroup you are
certainly aware I have no answers....however....if it makes you feel
any better you're among the more fortunate Chrysler product owners.
Many of us have had complete transmission (transmissionS)
replacements before 20,000 miles and deal with the daily little quirks
(like not shifting into Reverse, sluggish shifting, etc) constantly.
I have a 1996 Intrepid and according to Chrysler (in spite of all the
mechanical malfunctions) here's what they say: "the car functions as
designed."
<cough>
At least they willingly admit they produce JUNK! The trick is getting
them to do something to rectify the situation for those of us who
bought their cars. (You can kiss THAT goodbye).
Yes, I'm a woman.... yes I expect quality and performance from my
car...yes I EXPECT the words "customer service" to mean just that:
CUSTOMER SERVICE. However...give it up....unload the thing as SOON AS
YOU CAN....cuz they won't do a thing to help you....you're stuck and
the sooner you unload it...the more pleasant (and affordable) your
experience with a car will be!
And.... just in case you missed the REAL point of this message
(remember....you asked for opinions, suggestions....)
AVOID BUYING ANYTHING THAT HAS THE CHRYSLER NAME ON IT OR A
CONNECTION TO CHRYSLER CORPORATION IN ANYWAY....and IF you're
unfortunate enough already own a Chrysler and are having problems...
GET USED TO IT, PLAN ON IT, PLACE ALL YOUR BETS ON THE FACT
NOTHING WILL BE DONE ABOUT IT and....well, at least you will have
stumbled upon one of the very few sure things in this world....
Best of luck to ya!

Val, unfortunately this does nothing to help the fellow with the
transmission problems nor does it assist the rest of us Chrysler owners in
any way shape or form. I have had transmission problems with my Eagle Vision
which were seen to by my dealer to my complete satisfaction. Chrysler
products have been very reliable in my experience, much more so than the
sorry excuses for cars I owned with the Honda and General Motors badges on
them. I intend to continue to give Chrysler first consideration in future
car buying situations based on the fact that my existing and previous
Chrysler cars have been very reliable and any problems have been seen to
quickly and reliably by my dealer.
Now, to the matter at hand... I live near the dealership in question. I have
posted my belief that this dealership is not a good one and should be
avoided and I have recommended two other dealerships nearby to try. Again, I
suggest avoiding the dealership at Dixie Rd. & Hwy 401 and try one of the
others. Call the Chrysler Canada number and register a complaint. Get the
complaint number and give it to the service manager at the dealership. Be
polite and courteous. It's amazing how much better you'll be treated if you
just treat the other person the same way you yourself expect to be treated.

Hi Mike,
First of all, I want to thank you for your contributions to this
group; your input is very much appreciated. In fact, I'm wondering if
you could recommend a local Toronto dealership where I can bring my
car for service (you can e-mail me directly if you wish).
I drive a 1994 LHS (102,000 km) and I too have been experiencing the
dreaded "bump stop" from time to time. It happens most frequently in
heavy traffic -- when, naturally, the unit is doing a lot of shifting
-- and I try to minimize its occurrence by accelerating/braking *very*
slowly and *always* coming to a complete stop as traffic demands
dictate. So far, this has worked reasonably well but, obviously, I'd
like to correct the problem if it can be resolved relatively
painlessly (otherwise, I'll have to spend the rest of my life driving
like a little old lady... as it is, my friends still taunt me about
driving "an old man's car").
I live in Scarborough and have had the car serviced for warranty work
at the Chrysler/Plymouth dealership closest to my home. I'm not
totally satisfied with the quality of their work but, at the same
time, I'm reluctant to try out another dealership for fear they could
be (*gasp*) even worse. My worst fear is that they'll rip the damn
thing apart, tell me it's busted and then demand $2,000.00 for a new
unit when perhaps all that was required was a minor adjustment.
That said....
As uncomfortable as I am at the thought of having my car serviced here
in Toronto, I do want to relay a pleasant experience I had with a
Chrysler dealership in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Last summer I drove
back to Halifax to visit my family and while I was there, the
transmission caused the car to buck and heave like a bronco in heat.
After tossing me about like a tennis ball, it finally settled down by
going into "limp" mode. Shaken by this experience, in more ways than
one, I made an appointment to bring it in the next day at Courtesy
Chrysler.
By next morning, both I and the car had somehow regained our
collective composure. As someone from out of province, I fully
expected to be taken for a ride; you could plainly read the word
"victim" all over this man's face. Imagine my surprise, when the
service manager told me the problem was probably due to a weak
internal seal and that a sensor detected a momentary loss of fluid
pressure within one of the inner cavities, thereby triggering its
shutdown -- my memory is a bit fuzzy on the details, but I think that
was the jest of it, more or less. I asked if I could harm the
transmission by continuing to drive the car as it was (it was shifting
smoothly at this point), and he said no and that I should be able to
return safely to Toronto and have the work done there. Total cost of
visit, $44.00. I made a point of talking with a number of people in
the waiting room while I was there and each person I spoke with
expressed similar satisfaction with this dealership. So, I pass that
along for what it's worth.
Cheers,
Paul M. Eldridge
