can one use a heater hose as a crankcase vent hose in a '85 plymouth reliant?

one end of the hose connecting the crankcase vent to the air cleaner has
cracked. the hose - which was replacement put there by a shop 5 months
ago - is much more rigid than rubber but a little bit pliable. it has
been molded to fit in the space between the crankcase vent unit and the
air cleaner. i tried to buy a replacement hose and was prepared to mold
it myself if necessary. the biggest auto parts place in this area do not
have anything comparable and offers a heater hose as an alternative. the
heater is more or less as pliable as a fuel hose. will it do the job
safely?

Absolutely not.. The oil vapors will deteriorate the rubber of the
heater hose and it will not last at all. The chrysler dealer should have
or be able to get the proper pre-formed hose for about 5 or 6 dollars.

I am not familiar with the Reliant but the stovepipe on my JEEP cracked
at one point and I had to replace it. My local automotive/hardware store
had a generic replacement. They are aluminum, accordion styled "hose". I
would suggest that this is the most suitable for the application.

I've done it lots of times, no problem, except for making it fit. In your
car, that could be a problem.

Well, how dangerous could if be if it didn't work?
I don't think they ever made a chips episode about it, so it can't be that
dangerous.

Seriously, I am dissapointed in the lack of do-it-yourself motive here.
When I work on my cars, well, at least the cars that don't really have
a need to be preserved in factory form, I don't hesitate to do somthing like
wrap up a peice of cardboard in duct tape and use that. Well, maybe not
cardboard, I have to save that for my gaskets. If it is just connected to
the air cleaner, then cut it off past the crack and tape a rag over it.
Use wire if the tape falls off. Or replace it with a breather cap of some
sort if you feel the need to spend money.
