I am thinking of purchasing a tent trailer with a weight of 2100 lbs. I
wonder if my 91 Voyager SE with a V6 3.0 liter engine can tow this trailer
safely. The Owners Manual is not very clear on this topic. According to
this Manual if I have a Heavy Duty tow package installed I can tow upto
2600 lbs with a fully loaded vehicle, otherwise I can tow only upto 1400
lbs.
I have checked with the local U-Haul place and they have indicated that
according to their handbook if I install a heavy duty
U-Haul hitch in my Van I can tow upto 3100 lbs. I am not sure if the
U-Haul heavy duty hitch is the same as the factory installed Heavy Duty Tow
Package.
Any information on this topic will be appreciated.
Thanks

Yusuf: A towing package does not only come with a hitch. The towing
package probably also includes trailer hitch wiring and a transmission
cooler. Read your owners manual carefully. If your still in question
call your dealer or Chrysler customer service. The real HITCH is if your
transmission will last. I wouldn't tow anything with an A-604 tranny
unless I had a cooler installed the size of New York State.

There are 3 clases of hitches. I'm a little rusty on which is the
highes/lowest capacity but they range from 1000 to 5000 pounds. The
tounge weight also is specified. If you can get an unscrupulous
installer to put more than the lowest class on your van, well, you've
made a big mistake.
Most front-wheel drive vehicles cannot pull large loads. I have used
my 3.0/A604 91 spirit on a light trailor many a time, but I make sure
the overdrive doesn't come into use.
if you do tow, watch the engine temp. It's a small indication of the
tranny load. good luck on this.
