California Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo was arrested early Friday morning
on suspicion of driving under the influence after she was involved in a
traffic collision in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s online records show that Carrillo, 43,
was arrested at 1:35 a.m. on Friday and booked at 4:07 a.m.

According to The Los Angeles Times, LAPD arrested Carrillo after they
responded to her alleged collision into two parked vehicles in the 6200
block of Monterey Road in northeast Los Angeles.

In a cell phone video taken by the owner of one of the struck vehicles
that Fox 11 obtained, Carrillo could be seen in her car telling police,
“I’m sorry. I sneezed and lost track of the vehicle.”

The video then showed Carrillo performing a field sobriety test, where she
appeared to lose her balance. The witness who recorded the cell phone
footage also told Fox 11 that Carrillo's speech seemed to be slurred.

LAPD issued the following statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) on
Friday: “The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of media reports
centering in part on cell phone footage capturing what appears to be a
portion of a DUI investigation involving Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo and
her being afforded the opportunity to complete the field sobriety test at
what was characterized as a more private location.”
“Chief Moore directed the local command to review the officers’ body-worn
video regarding the officers’ actions and at this point the officers’
actions do not appear to be inappropriate,” the statement continued. "A
critical aspect of a field sobriety test is to provide a reasonable
location for the individual being examined to evaluate impairment without
obstruction or distraction.”

“The officers conducting the investigation are given the discretion to
perform the test at a location that best affords the evaluation of the
individuals in an objective manner,” the statement concluded.

According to a summary of Carrillo’s arrest provided by LAPD Capt. Kelly
Muniz, per the L.A. Times, Carrillo was arrested for her involvement in a
traffic collision while having a high blood-alcohol count, which Muniz
said is “double the legal limit or more.”
Online booking records show Carrillo was released on Friday on her “own
recognizance" hours after her arrest. She issued a statement that
afternoon.
"Early this morning I was involved in a traffic incident involving parked
vehicles. Thankfully, no one was harmed, and I have been cooperating with
law enforcement,” Carrillo said, per the L.A. Times. “As a public servant,
I am aware that I must adhere to a higher standard that demands personal
accountability for my conduct and I accept responsibility for my actions."

"I sincerely apologize to my family, constituents, colleagues and staff
for any actions of mine that have fallen short of that expectation. I
intend to seek the necessary help and support,” she continued. “As I do
so, I remain dedicated to my family, my constituents and the community
that I grew-up in and am proud to represent."

Per LAPD’s online booking records, Carrillo is scheduled to appear in
court on Dec. 1.

Carrillo has represented Los Angeles and South Glendale as part of the
52nd Assembly District since she was elected to serve the California State
Assembly in 2017.
