I have a 49 Dodge and the owners guide calls for water pump grease to be
applied to the pump every 1000 miles. Does anyone make this stuff? What is
it?

I know that at least Cadillac and Saturn use lubricating pellets with
their coolant systems. They are pellets that dissolve, and supposedly
lubricate the water pump.

That might be a fair replacement, and it is only to be used one time with
every coolant flush. I don't know.

Grease is basically oil and a thickener. Water pump grease used a
thickener that was relatively impervious to water. Apparently there is
still a manufacturer or two of water pump grease as indicated by letters
to the editor of Skinned Knuckles magazine.

I highly recommend you get a subscription to Skinned Knuckles. Well
written informative articles. I believe they now have a web site.

I have some water pump grease that I picked up literally decades ago, but
knowing what I now do from reading the recent series about lubrication in
Skinned Knuckles, I am sure it is too badly oxidized for use. I have been
using modern chassis grease in my water pump with no obvious problems. The
modern greases are almost all more water resistant than the old ones so I
do not feel I am taking too big a chance here.

Another poster mentioned pellets to put in to the cooling system. These
will not lubricate the bearings in your pump. The pump has two plain
(journal) bearings that need grease actually in the bearing. There is a
grease resevoir between the bearings that the grease fitting fills. Any
lube you put in the water will only lubricate the seal face, not the
bearings behind it.

I would suggest you call water pump guru Arthur Gould in New York
(516-754-5010) Arthur has many many years of service dealing with water
pumps of all kinds. He rebuilds them and can give you the straight
answere you seek.

Peter,
Try a Wal-Mart or equivalent for a marine grease (used on boat trailer
bearings, engine mount bushings etc. for boats). Highly water resistant
with good high temp properties.

Back in the days when there were lots of grease fittings on cars,
there was need for different greases for different lubricating fittings.
Sodium based grease was used in wheel bearings (before disk brakes)
but sodium greases would wash out of bearings when exposed to lots
of water. It was then necesssary to use a water resistant grease
for the water pump. Hydrated calcium grease was a common water pump
grease.
Now automotive greases are "multipurpose" meaning they can be used on
all automotive grease fittings and are water and rust resistant. Lithium
greases are common automotive greases and can be used in the water pump.

Peter,
Water pump grease...
Don't think you can obtain it anymore.
However, find an industrial supply house near you and ask about plug grease.
Plug grease is a very thick grease that comes in the form of little round
sticks approximately 1" long and various diameters. It is used to lubricate
large motor operator seals for LARGE valves in chemical plants, refineries,
Water treatment facilities, and the like.

Hope this helps.

on old marine engines water pumps .Works great and not all that costly.
