I have been very happy with my Cincinnati Microwave Passport. I had a
car with a defective regulator that melted most of the electronics
inside and it was still repaired under warranty. The were very helpful
and very quick. The Passport itself has been very durable. I used it for
a couple of years on my motorcycle and it managed rain and hitting the
pavement without any damage. If someone steals mine I will buy another!

ditto...great product, outstanding customer service. have my Passport
that still works great after over 14 years (time to update to laser
detector)

One of their engineers formed their own company, Valentine1. I
understand that Valentine1 has gotten fantastic reviews (and is
probably a better product), but my next unit will be from CM since
they have earned my business, imho.

the only downside is that CM does not sell thru stores, only direct
(or via the web) this means that you can't get it at a discount or
haggle about price. also, many people are not familiar with CM since
you don't see it in stores. I think their url is 'escort_radar.com'
or something like that.

Yup, I've had BELL for about 14 years now and they are good units. I
dropped one and they replaced it several years out of warranty for
about $40. This year I'm haviong a K-40 installed in my new vehicle.
They are owned By BELL and considered a higher end unit.

A radar detector still helps with instant-on radar.

If a cop is clocking every couple of cars, a good detector will catch
the 'blip' when he clocked the car in front of you.

I've had that happen and I've been able to brake than 'beeeeeeep' my
Passport goes 'full scale' and he's measured my speed. (of course if
your front wheels have locked up and your front end is almost hitting
the ground from braking so hard......

Also, since false alarms come from things like burglar alarms and
automatic door openers at grocery stores around the city, if you get a
little 'blip' and you're out in the middle of nowhere, the only thing
that it could be is a cop.

Here's my question for the group: Do laser detectors help??

Twice I've gotten stopped (Ga, Kentucky) at close range by a cop with
a laser speed gun. In everyday driving, can a little box on the dash
really detect a instant-on laser beam and give you enough time to slow
before getting clocked???

Under the theory of dispersion and following someone else who was being
aimed at, at least I've seen that advertised. I've been lucky so far,
except when I had my escort sitting on the seat and was nabbed by laser.
It didn't even whimper.

With radar, so far I've been okay. Sometimes I do the bumper into the
pavement jolt. I don't know how long they have to measure before they're
locked on...

How about remote detectors that mount in the grill, are any of those any
good?

I was thinking of that myself. However they might get you from the
REAR...

I read a review of radar detectors about two years ago in Car Stereo
Review. They basically sped across the country using different
detectors to see which ones worked best. Results: Valentine came out
on top. However, they said the best way to avoid tickets was to use a
Bear Cat from Uniden. It's a radio frequency scanner I belive.
Supposedly, it picks up the special frequecies used by police and lets
you know where they are. This eliminates getting busted with laser or
radar pulsing.

I put a lot of stock in Yakima roof racks.
Haven't had a single ticket since I replaced the old Thules.
