I have a 92 S10 Blazer 4x4. I am trying to identify what needs repaired in
the front drive train. It is a push button 4x4 opposed to the old linkage
design.

Q 1). Is it possible for the front differential to be partially engaged?
Or is it just engaged or disengaged? Is it possible for only one axle to be
engaged if the cable needs replaced? From the sound I can hear, I believe
I have a broken axle but am not sure since I don't know how the front
differential operates. Opinions?

Q 2). Does the CV joints (front axles) turn at all times, even when in 2x4
mode?

Q 3). When in 2x4 mode, should the front drive shaft turn?

Q 4). Anyone aware of a GM page or some other link, that would show detail
instructions, diagrams, etc for repairing a 92 S10 Blazer.

Any help would be appreciated. Please also send a reply to

I don't know if this will help, but my 89 had a bad vacuum switch. This
meant that the front axels stayed engaged in the front wheels even when
in 4x2, this made for some nasty vibration, much like driving on a
washboard road. If you are experiencing this, it might be your
problem. I'm not sure if the axels are still supposed to turn when in
4x2, I know they do when the truck is on the hoist, but I don't know
about when the suspension is loaded and the CV's aren't on such an
angle.

i have an '89 s-10 blazer 4x4 and had front drive-train problems at one time.
here is what i know. the front CV's (Constant Velocity) are supposed to turn
all the time but the front drive shaft should not be turning in 2 wheel drive.
if the front drive shaft is turning then it's probably a bad vacuum switch, at
least that's what it was on my '89. it was a ten dollar part and took about 15
minutes to replace. I'm not quite sure if it's the same set-up on the
push-button systems. ask at the dealer. blazer are known for this problem and
the dealer near me said he keeps a large stock of these switches on hand.

~~~~My front driveshaft turns at all times. It is either turning at transfer
HIGH (direct speed) or transfer LOW (half speed) depending upon the shift
selector. The vacuum servo will determine to engage, or disengage the front
axle to 4X4 or 2WD.
~~~~ Buy a Chilton book. It's faster than looking up anything on the web about
this.

You're not going to find any easier publication, without someone right in front
of you showing you how to do it. The Chilton book is thorough, although
sometimes wrong, but it is the easier manuals to read out there.

FYI

I had two vacuum lines crossed, bad vacuum switch on transfer case, broken
outputshaft on differential, and ground up bearing on right axle.

Now all I have to do, and put back together. :)
