Hi all,
I just put in an order for a VenturCraft cargo/tent trailer. I ordered it with
the pintle hitch rather than the standard ball-type. I have a few questions:
(1) Is backing up a trailer with this sort of hitch more difficult than with
the std ball-type?
(2) Will it really be as noisy as I have heard?
(3) Are there any locks available for pintle hitches?
(4) Are there any tricks for manuevering a small trailer on tight mountain
switchbacks? I'll be pulling it with a 4x4 with a 105in wheelbase.

TIA. Please respond diretly to the following email address: p14...@email.sps.mot.com

I have a pintle hook/lunette eye Army surplus trailer for my Jeep TJ. I
haven't towed much with a ball, and I haven't had a chance to take this one
off road yet, so I can't speak to most of your questions, but it isn't very
noisy at all on roads. Just a thunk or two as I get started after the
initial back-out. But that may be much more common in rough, hilly,
off-road terrain where you're always pulling at an angle.

But no complaints from me!

Here is my comments and experiences in the order you requested.

1) A pintle hitch is no more difficult to backup than a ball hitch.
Ease of backing up is more of a function of how long-short the trailer
is and how many axles it has.

2) Shouldn't be, I haven't noticed any difference in noise. The
pintle hitches I have used usually have an air gap around where the
trailer eye and pintle hitch of the vehicle meet. This causes slop
and a felt thud when accelerating-deacclerating of the vehicle, and
the trailer hits the vehile or pulls away from the vehilcle
accordingly.

3) There is no locking devices on the pintles I have used, but that
doesn't mean that "all" are unlockable.

4) No flame intended, but there is really no tricks in manuevering in
tight situations other than "be realitively sure you can go through
before starting. and don't plan on backing up" Get out before the
tight corner and walk it to see whats around the corner. Turn around
in a suitable spot before you get wedged in with that trailer behind
you. You may want to drop the trailer off somewhere and drive the
"tight switchbacks" with your vehicle to see how bad-good the
situation is and then go back and get the trailer. Pain in the ass?
Yes, but better than going down an unkown road with a trailer in tow
and finding out you have to turn around and there is no turn around
spot. I am thinking you are talking about mountain off road 4x4 type
dirt roads-trails when you are talking about mountain swith-backs. If
not, and you are talking about regular paved roads, then everything I
have said goes out the window.

Hi. I've got a 52 M-37 with one of these type pintle hitches. On mine
there isn't a "lock" as in a padlock, but there is a heavy duty cotter
pin that goes in it to lock in the release lever.

In my other life as an Army Guy, I've done time in Transport driving a
large truck (10 ton capacity, 6x6) with a 2.5 ton trailer in tow and had
no problems with the cotter pin. I took that rig everywhere you could
imagine and never lost a trailer. Gotten pretty stuck though.....
