I bought the truck off the lot, not special order. It had the optional
"pushbutton" transfer case, so I thought, ...this is a cool thing... Now I'm
not so sure. Recently, however it occurred to me that I cannot put this
transfer in Neutral. Is there a special sequence of buttons to push or is
there really no Neutral setting for this case?
I'm trying to think of reasons why I would "need" to put the case in
neutral, the ones I can think of off hand would be a PTO winch and towing
the vehicle.
What other reasons would there be to use the neutral setting on the transfer
case?
Guess I fell victim to the "cushy 4x4 for the masses" routine.
Is this a good transfer case (NP231 I believe, crawled under there once and
looked but can't remember as I write this)?

What does your owners manual say about towing your truck?"T-case in neutral"?
is common.I'm curious about newer model's.
I've only towed my 77 the day I bought it.I put the T-case in neutral.A few
other times,I used a flatbed service.Most recently,was in the winter,with the
plow on.He winched me on backwards, with the plow sticking out ALOT.
Would really be a shame if you *had* to use a flat bed. prefer them myself
though..

I believe you can put the transfer case into neutral by depressing both
buttons at the same time. This should be easy enough to test on a slight
slope...
Cheers!

There is no neutral setting on this transfer case. It is actually a NP243e
t-case. only choices are 2hi, 4hi, and 4lo. The transfer case will not shift
to 4lo above 5 mph and only when the transmission is in neutral (automatic only)

There is only one ultimate off road machine.
The one you build with your own hands.
There is no Neutral on the 97 transfer case unless it has the
conventional shift lever. And there is no combination of buttons that
will put it into neutral. This has been changed on the 99 (and maybe
98's) so that the transfer case CAN be shifted into neutral with the
correct button-pushing sequence outlined in the Owner's Manual. I
know---I own a 97 and a 99 Suburban and both have the electronic
transfer case (the 99 also has an automatic position that will shift
between 2-wheel and 4-wheel high as surface conditions dictate).

Thanks to those that responded here and email. The truck has been great
since I bought it. It did have one problem with the drivers side rear brake
sticking causing the drum to overheat. Dealer replaced the whole brake
assembly on the driver side. Been ok since.
I think I'm going to start looking at the new Chevy's. Something tells me to
wait till after the first model year so they can work out any bugs in the
new design. It will be hard to give up the good old ground pounding 350
though!
Thanks to all!
