I'm trying to objectively determine if these two failures were coincidence
or a larger design/materials problem. Based on input, I will try to
further escalate within Toyota. I have visited their "owner's lounge" and
posted this question, as well as calling their 800 Customer service line.
The 800 line said they knew of no problem(they did mention a problem with
earlier vintage 4x4, for which they offer a free extension to the original
warrenty), and no reply from the Web site.
Has this happened to your Toyota T100? Please provide details.
I have a 1991 toyota 3.0 v-6 that had the same problem. After some
serious
bitch sesions with the dealer, they ended up replacing the whole mess. I
forgot to mention that I have 59k on the truck. My dealer informs me this
is not an isolated incident. Toyota needs to RECALL but they have to much
pride.
Same thing happend to my '95 T100 4x4. Mine had 32k miles on it when it blew. The
guy at the toyota place said that Toyota *was* aware of the problem and that's why
they (toyota) had switched to a different type of head gasket (I assume a different
brand). I was told that the problem was due fact that the block (cast iron) cools at
a different rate than the head (aluminum)...no surprise there. However, the orig.
head gasket couldn't accomodate the difference in cooling rates. The new ones are
supposed to be able to handle this difference in cooling rates. They went ahead and
replace the other head gasket for me while they had it in the shop and torn down.
This was the only problem I've had and haven't had any since.
Anyone else get a different story from Toyota??

So I bought a 1997 Ford Ranger. VERY nice truck. I still think the
Toyotas with 4 cylinder engines are #1 in durability, but I will give
them some more time to perfect their V6s. Besides, I needed a new
truck. The old one was dirty.
My $0.02 (and worth every penny)

Were these with the 3.0L engine or the 3.4L engine? Anybody know
if the defective head gaskets were corrected by the time the 97
models came out? I have a 97 T100 with the 3.4L.
