The head gasket in my 1995 T100 4x4 xtra cab blew last Monday, exactly 4
months after the same happened to my brother-in-law's 1995 T100 4x4. My
truck has 38k, his 20k. My discussions with several Toyota mechanics and
searches on the internet indicate this is not an isolated incident.
Although it is covered under warrenty for now, I'm still concerned it may
happen again, as the mechanic was not sure how "updated" the replacement
gasket was from the original (if anyone can suggest a viable third-party
gasket, please do!).

I'm trying to objectively determine if these two failures were coincidence
or a larger design/materials problem. Based on input, I will try to
further escalate within Toyota. I have visited their "owner's lounge" and
posted this question, as well as calling their 800 Customer service line.
The 800 line said they knew of no problem(they did mention a problem with
earlier vintage 4x4, for which they offer a free extension to the original
warrenty), and no reply from the Web site.

Has this happened to your Toyota T100? Please provide details.

I have a 1991 toyota 3.0 v-6 that had the same problem. After some
serious
bitch sesions with the dealer, they ended up replacing the whole mess. I
forgot to mention that I have 59k on the truck. My dealer informs me this
is not an isolated incident. Toyota needs to RECALL but they have to much
pride.

Same thing happend to my '95 T100 4x4. Mine had 32k miles on it when it blew. The
guy at the toyota place said that Toyota *was* aware of the problem and that's why
they (toyota) had switched to a different type of head gasket (I assume a different
brand). I was told that the problem was due fact that the block (cast iron) cools at
a different rate than the head (aluminum)...no surprise there. However, the orig.
head gasket couldn't accomodate the difference in cooling rates. The new ones are
supposed to be able to handle this difference in cooling rates. They went ahead and
replace the other head gasket for me while they had it in the shop and torn down.
This was the only problem I've had and haven't had any since.

Anyone else get a different story from Toyota??

I had a 93 Toy 4X4 V6 and I was concerned about the head gasket issue.
I had 61,000 miles on it and it never gave me a bit of trouble except
for the engine seals which went out at 60,000 miles (the dealer
noticed they were just starting to go when it was in for the timing
belt replacement). After talking to several dealerships and reading
all of the posts here and in Dejanews, I came to the conclusion that
ALL Toyota trucks with V6s made between 1990 and 1996(?) would blow
the head gaskets eventually. About half the dealers told me the new
gaskets fixed everything, the other half changed the subject when I
asked them if the problem could reoccur. They also would not fix
anything until they actually went. Since I frequently travel in the
desert, far away from even a paved road, this was a gamble I could not
afford to take.

So I bought a 1997 Ford Ranger. VERY nice truck. I still think the
Toyotas with 4 cylinder engines are #1 in durability, but I will give
them some more time to perfect their V6s. Besides, I needed a new
truck. The old one was dirty.

My $0.02 (and worth every penny)

Were these with the 3.0L engine or the 3.4L engine? Anybody know
if the defective head gaskets were corrected by the time the 97
models came out? I have a 97 T100 with the 3.4L.

The head gasket problem seems to be with the 3.0 . Toyota is well aware of
the problem as it is affecting 6cyl engines from 1988 to 1995. They are
replacing most of them that blow at no charge even if the warranty is up .
How do I know, my 1992 4runner w/ 105,000 is in the shop getting a new
toyota sponsered head gasket now.

Toyota has had a problem with head gaskets on 3.0 & 3.4 engines, this is
caused by a weak place in the lt frt head gasket to block surface...the
problem is gasket crawl....this is only on the 3.4 engines; the 3.o
engines has developed an internal leak from the cyl head to block, coolant
is discharged into the internal side of the engine.......Toyota is
replacing this gaskets on all Pickups / Sport Utility Vehicles.
The extended warrenty has been increased to 8yrs / 100 thousand miles
which ever comes first. Consult your Local Toyota Dealer for replacement
details, most all dealers will place you in a rental vehicle -paid for by
Toyota Motors Limited.
Toyota expects this problem to be resolved with the 1998 Vehicles , The
extended warrenty is excellant for these Toyota owners.
