Anyone out there have some data on gas mileage for this engine, in
particular, in a Dodge Dakota 4x4 extended cab, Automatic, from the mid
'90's?

Thanks in advance.

'95 Ram 1500, 4x4, reg cab, short bed, auto, 3.92 gears, 33" tires 5.2l gets
12.0-12.5 around town and 15.0-15.5 at 65 mph.

I have documented every drop of gas I used for the 7789 miles I have put on
my 96 Ram 1500 CC SB 4x4 5.2l, beginning with purchase at 58558 miles. As
near stock as can get. I live in ND where cold 1/2 year, drive lots of short
trips. Total of 699.67 gallons used for overall of 11.13 mpg. $1036.81 for
the curious. Low of 8.08, high of 13.62mpg. Very disappointing considering
that best was when setting cruise at 70mph on flat interstate, driving until
nearly empty. next fill only9.9, so assume did not fill as full for "best".
Most people that post seem to get much better. Seems noone will admit
piss-poor gas mileage, but brag about good (comparatively) Often wonder if
theirs is overall mpg on many miles or just the best they ever got. Also
suspect that two identical trucks with consecutive serial numbers may
fluctuate by 4mpg if driven on exact same road. Keep that in mind when
buying. I hope next used vehicle has mpg computer in to give me rough idea
on test drive, or dealer lets me drive it 200 miles to get idea. I love my
truck, but the gas mileage sucks. I hear that Dakotas have comparable
mileage and insurance costs, so seem impractical to give up the extra
capacity of the 1500.
good luck

The difference between stock tires and oversize, manual vs auto, and 65MPH
vs 70MPH are all considerable. We have to question if the tire size
difference was properly corrected for on the report below. 4x4 vs 4x2 also
makes a big difference. A bed covering has some influence too. On gassers,
the fuel economy can suffer badly if the catalytic converter is clogged or
the spark plugs worn.

If you care about fuel economy and need a truck, get the 2500 Cummins.
That's what I have: 14MPG pure in town, 15-16MPG on my 10mile to work
commute (8 miles of freeway, 2 interchanges), 20 MPG cruising at 65MPH up
and down a very long hill (Donner pass), 22MPG best (tail wind much of the
way), AND I've got a big truck to boot (needed to haul my slide in camper)
All MPG figured on single tanks of fuel from measured distances and fuel
use, noting that the MPG read out on the overhead is not particularly
accurate (I've heard reports of +/-15% from true). It drops to 15MPG with
the camper on at 65MPH, btw.

For a typical truck with no load, driving slower (within reason), bigger
diameter wheels (requires correcting the speedo), a manual transmission, and
a bed covering can make 2-3MPG worth of difference. My "instant" MPG guage
drops about 1MPG between 65 and 70MPH and jumps about 10MPG between 65 and
45MPH. It reads the highest in the 40-45MPH speed range.

2000 Dodge/Cummins 2500 QCab 4x4 6spd long bed
245 70R19.5 wheels, rigid tonneau cover on bed
Newly added CPC makes gobs of power, passes Cal smog, supposed to get 1MPG
better-too new to tell yet.

Hey, thanks folks, for spending time to write in detail. It is much
appreciated. I hope someday I can reciprocate!

My 2000 1500 CC 4x4 5.2L gets between 11-14mpg. I've never gotten better than
14. I've always felt mine was a tad low on the highway because I have a
constant problem with the torque converter unlocking and locking at 5-10 second
intervals whenever at speeds above 60mph. 3 dealers can't seem to find any
problem so I'm stuck with it. Even so, guess my mpg is on par with yours. I
dont expect great mpg from a big truck, I just want it to work correctly.

Troy, my '95 Ram 2500 (bought new) with a V10 and NV4500 5 speed
manual, with 3.55's, and a camper shell gets 11-13 all around miles up
here at 6500+ feet above sea level. I've gotten as low as 10 and as
high as 15. With that, it seemed impractical to give up the capacity
of the 2500 for the 1500.

Of course, YMMV.....
