Hi,

Does anyone know what the diameter of a 7.00-16 tire is?
This was the original tire size for my truck, but I don't know how
to convert that sizing system to the flotation system
(diam X section width X wheel size, ie 31x10.50x15).

I've called a couple tire shops around here, but no help...

TIA!

Actual diameter ranges between 30 and 31.5" (depending on brand), and 7 is
the actual thread with, in contrast with the above 10.50, which is section
width. Rather difficult to compare systems, unless you have the tire at
hand for a direct comparison. The inch floatation system is often
optimistic too btw, actual circumference rarely matches the numbers.
Btw, is 'floatation system' its real official name? Never heard it before.

Yes. Or at least that's how all the tire manufactures and magazines
reference it as when comparing them to like sized metric tires.

What was the system for the old (not as old as the 7.00-16 system) for
bias ply tires: L78-15, H78-15, ect? I have grown up in the metric
sized radial tire age, and Dad's old answer "because Mr. Goodyear said so"
has always left a doubt in my mind.

If you know what the aspect ratio is, you can work it out..
The aspect ratio is the ratio between the height of the sidewall and the
width of the tread.

So if your aspect ratio for your tire is 100%, the side walls will be 7"
high.

If your aspect ratio is 85%, the side walls will be 6" (5.95") high.

Therefore, for 100%, 7+7+16=30" high. Note the two 7", to account for
both side of tyre with a diameter measurement...

I have 7.5 * 16 Desert Dueller tyres on my FJ45, and I just went and
measured them.
They are 78cm or 30.7" across. Thats not an exact measurement, but a
pretty good idea.

Ask your supplier to find out for you, or email me with tyre type (brand
and model) and I'll ring a supplier here in Australia for you.

Regards,

Garry.

Dunno. Not even sure I was born then. I'll have to ask around.

Your dad might be right. I'm thinking Grandpa might answer with
something similar. :-)

The "old" 7.50-16 is a British/Commonwealth system and is based on a ratio of
0.82 tread/sidewall length. A 7.5 inch tread would have a 6.15 inch sidewall
so when you double it (two sidewalls per diameter) and add it to the 16 inch
wheel, you have a total diameter of 28.3. The closest metric ratio are the
85s, in fact the 235/85/16 is very similar to the 7.50-16.

Cheers,
