Like I have said I am looking for a 96-98 4runner limited, but I recently saw
a 1998 montero sport loaded with leather with 9,000 miles on it, for about
23,000 I could get it for. I like this vehicle because it is like the
4runner, #1 you don't see many, #2 it has a unique look, #3 big tires #4 big
fender flares.. #5 I think you get a lot more for your $$$$$money though,
over a 4runner!

Has anyone looked at these montero sport's. I am looking to buy a used 98 or a
96-98 4runner limited. I have always wanted a 4runner, but these Mitsubishi
Monteros are pretty sweet,

enlighten me.....
Thanks!!!

How do you realistically plan to use the 4x4 you select. What do you
need the 4x4 ability for? Off-roading or just driving on paved roads in
bad weather? Do you plan on any serious off-roading?

>>>>>>Well,I don't know about the enlighten part, but the thing that
turned me off the Montero Sport was it was too damn slow! The transmission
seemed to be odd too, like it was shifting just to shift sometimes,up and
down when it wasn't even needed.I like the looks of it though..
I drove just about all the current models,including a 4 runner,but
after a friends problems with his:Electrical, front end,and the prices
they got for parts,it really turned me off the Toyota. The same as it did
almost 20 years ago when I was looking to get a 4WD pickup, too much money
for it,and way too much to fix it.....

I knew who had the "regular" montero had almost no problems. It seems like
the most minor part bought from a Toyota dealer was at least $75!About
twice the eq.part would for,say a chevy, and that was about double what it
should have been.Another thing, doesn't anyone else see old Toyota trucks
driving around with see-through beds??A guy I used to see at the bank
drive through line's truck rotted out in less than eight years. It started
getting spots along that weirdo seam along the side of the bed when it
was about 3 years old.My old Blazer Bought the same time is still
intact, body wise, the toy is gone,he had a Yukon last time I saw him at
the bank..

As far as toyota truck beds rusting, I would tend to agree. I own a 1995 T100,
in which I move a good many tree, and it came with a removable bed liner. This
liner allows enough sliding against the paint to get down to metal, and quickly
rust. As a result of this I removes old rust, touch-up the metal, and get a
good layer of carnuba, all of which may do nothing, but atleast it puts my mind
to rest. I would tend to think that this might be the problem. I should also
like to point out that many american trucks of said age are also quite
transparent, but then again, I don't see to many old american trucks.
So any way, I don't thick this problem carries over to the 4-runner, as it has
no bed or removable bed liner.

Hey, not just owned....did you know that all JC's and JGC's for the
European market are made & assembled in Graz, Austria? Even available with
an Italian VM diesel engine....:-))

Not that Toyota never did this (Brasil, Portugal, SA), but you never hear
people brag about an all-Japanese vehicle anyway....;-))

Oh really? Then how come Toyotas used to be cheap compared
to similar US vehicles? Toyota made it big by being cheaper
and better than other vehicles.

It wasn't until the US car companies cried for import taxes
that the price of Toyotas went up. At one time the 4 Runner
cost $12k new here in the US. When the government started
listening to the car makers and threatened to stick big
import fees on the Japanese so that US companies wouldn't go
bankrupt. Imports were flooding the market at the time.
Toyota offered to solve the problem for them by raising
their prices. Within just a few years a 4 Runner cost
nearly $30k.

You'd think the Japanese would remember what built their
economy for them and start selling vehicles cheap again.
They're doing the same thing US companies did. Overpricing
themselves into oblivion. They could save their economy by
lowering their prices.

Well since you've not gotten any responses from actual Montero Sport
owners, here goes:

I would recommend the Sport to anyone. I have a '98 XLS... fully loaded
with leather, sun roof, locking rear differential: absolutely every
available option. All priced around $3300 less than comparable 'Runner
Limited. This is the third Mitsubishi product I have owned ('93
Montero, '91 Galant -- no longer have either) and have put approximately
200,000 absolutely care-free miles on the three. All very reliable
products. 25,000 miles currently on the Sport.

The Sport's ride is better than most SUV's, even if you put bigger 10.50
x 31's on it. I continue to receive many compliments on the truck...
probably because they're not seen on every street corner like the
'Runner, Explorer, and Cherokee/GC. My wife digs it too.

Complaints? The front cup holder is poor, and the Sport cannot be had
with the Big Montero's Active Trac 4WD system. The Sport's 4WD is part
time only, as is Toyota's.

Seriously consider the Sport!

Trent

Charlie, I know nothing about economics. All I am saying is that Toyota
makes the most reliable vehicles on the highway today. Economics is a
whole new discussion. When one wants something and that something is to
be the "best", then one gets it if one can afford it. I don't mean to be
disrespectful or a wise---, but that's reality.
