Gas mileage calc via OBD-2 paramaters

Hello!
I've noticed that some scan tools (that connect through the OBD-2
diagnostic port) have the ability to monitor the current rate of gas
consumption (miles/gal). Does anyone know what OBD-2 parameters (data
such as engine RPM, MAP sensor values etc) are used in the calculation
and how the gas mileage is calculated?
