I'm noticing tell tale signs of a half shaft going bad in my Corsica.
I get the whining noise and now even some thumping at low cruise. I
plan to give the car away to my sister so I don't want to spend too
much on it. Is there a good way to determine which half shaft I need
to replace? The shafts cost about $80/each so if I could only do one,
that would save me.

"thumping' and popping noise on acceleration is an indication of inboard
CV joint failure ....

whinny noise.... well.... COULD be transmission, power steering, a
bunch of things...

The best way is to look at the CV boots, and see if there ok (not torn,
no grit inside of torn boots)... if torn and gritty inside of torn CV
boots-replace
