Well, this probably isn't what you wanted to hear, but I don't like them.
I have a friend with a pair of 301s (not sure what series, they are about
four years old) and IMO they just don't generate enough bass.
When I was buying speakers five years ago I considered several models and
finally settled on a pair of Advent Legacy. They have a relatively large
sealed enclosure and have tight, controlled bass. I prefer this to open
or bass-reflex design speakers.
The $300-$500 range is a tough one. There are a lot of different
sounding speakers for this price, and it's largely a matter of personal
taste. I would listen to as many different models as you can, and make
sure the store you buy from has a return policy. IMO, the listening room
has a drastic effect on how speakers will sound. Some rooms and speakers
simply aren't compatible while others seem to complement each other.
It's hard to tell what they'll really sound like until you get them home.
