I've begun to look at sub-woofers and have encountered 2 types of powered
subwoofers. A servo-controlled subwoofer and a normal powered. Is there
a big difference in how they work? Does the servo give cleaner bass?
For reference I'm looking at the Velodyne VA-1012II, the Def. Tech., and
the Velodyne f-1000, & f-1200.

Thanks for any help.

velodyne has a strong argument for servo feedback in subwoofers. the ear
is much more sensitive to middle frequency energy than to low frequency
energy, so a large amount of energy is required to produce normal bass. a
small percentage distortion of this energy is still a relatively large
amount of distortion, and more importantly, the distortion is displaced
upward in frequency to where the ear is much more sensitive to energy,
making the distiortion much more noxious. (the distortion is displaced
upward in frequency because it consists of higher order harmonics.)

all this indicates that subwoofer distortion should be kept very low, which
can be done with survo feedback.

sorry if the above is not absolutely clear.

Basicly servo controlled subwoofers gives you lower distorion than the same
woofer would do, without feedback. There is also possibilities in response
shaping, you will be able to get a lower -3dB frequency with a servo-sub.
But you have to feed it with more power to do so.
The servo-subwoofer has a position, velocity or acceleration feedback
circuitry, that compares the input signal and the output from the woofer.

I just purchased the Velodyne F-1000 with the servo control system. I
did test drive the F-1000 and the Velodyne VA series side by side. You
can notice cleaner bass using the F series.

Hope this helps,
