How does a technics receiver (85 watts per channel) compare with
a Denon DRA345 receiver (40 watts per channel)?

This post is lacking a lot of information. What kind of price range
are you dealing with? Which model of Technics are you looking at?
Do the features in both satisfy you?

Personally, I would take the Denon in a shot. You may not be able
to crank it at a party quite as well, but the sound will be much
more pleasant.

In General:

Denon - Affordable quality audio components...

Technics - Mass produced consumer electronics...

Now which would you pick??

Me, I would pick an Onkyo... of course if I had the dough... maybe a Marantz
or some other high-end...

Is this maybe a cultural difference? I never thought I'd see the words
'Marantz' and 'high-end' used in the same sentence.

Marantz has a wide variety of equipment. THey make shit for Sears, but
also make some stuff that will clearly give Denon/Yamaha a run for their
money.

THen again I understand that Nakamichi (sp) started out by making Sears
type equipment as well. Look at them now.

Ah yes, but remember the good old days of analog tuners? The Marantz
easily had the "overkill flywheel" award. They must of used the flywheel
out of a '65 Buick in the thing.

Maybe he was referring to the OLD "Marantz" when Saul still ran
the company and their products compared very nicely to McIntosh.

Remember the old 10B tuner with the built-in O-scope?

Oh yeah, >:-)

You mean again? The 10b tuner was really the beginning of the modern high end business.

Did occur to me that it might be that Marantz market different parts of
their range on different sides of the pond. (And, I should probably
admit that I own a Marantz EQ551 -- gathering dust in the attic -- and
an SP50 -- in active use.)

There are certainly cultural differences as well. For another example,
Technics is much more highly regarded in the UK than it seems to be in
the US. Not that I'd tack the label high-end onto Technics either, but...

Marantz makes some very outstanding equipment... They have two CD players
which are reference standard and their AX-1000 DSP is the only kind in the
world... They also make amplifiers which are of better than mid-range
quality...

many years ago, Marantz and high end were synonymous. a LONG time ago.
