I don't know about in Portland, but in Eugene there are two. The best
is Bradfords (talk to Fred). They carry Definitive Tech, Boston Acoustics,
Magnaplaner, Vanderstein, Epos, Sonic Frontiers, Audio Alchamy, PAV, Adcom and
Mark Levinson. The other store is England Audio. They are pretty good except
they have a saleman that is the biggest prick I have ever met. England carries
Rotel, PSB, Nakamichi, McIntosh, Denon and B&W. There is a dealer that
carries Spica here, University High Fi, but it is the saddest shop I have ever
seen. Boxes on the floor, nothing hooked up, old newspapers laying around. It
looks like some slobs house.

Also there's always Chelsea Audio (935 SW Washington in Portland & 3700 SW Hall
in Beaverton), they carry Thiel, Levinson, McCormick, etc.

I'd like to give the highest recommendation to Bradford's Hi-Fidelity in
Eugene. Of the many stores I've been to, they are one of the very few that
treat customers the way they should be treated. I've never had a better buying
experience than I had there. The salesman I dealt with was Fred Roepke.

Oops! That wasn't me that wrote about Bradford's, but given the glowing
comments I'd like to vist them sometime... what lines do they carry???
There are actually several stores to check out in the portland area.
There is some sense of priority to these guys:
1. Corner Audio. Joe Weber, the sole proprietor, is very opinionated.
The stuff he sells is the best available if you believe everthing he
sez. He does carry good gear. Has a good demo policy, will cut
minor deals on big purchases. Has blowouts on demos occasionally.
Joe can be very tempermental (read rude) so if you catch him on a
bad day don't take it too personally and give him another chance.
He hates cheapskates. Joe may indeed be the quinticential high
end dealer in Portland. He likes tubes, but doesn't turn his
nose up at solid state stuff.
2. Sound Decisions. Jim Leighton, the sole proprietor, employs one
stupid sales drone. Avoid this guy. Jim is very knowledgable
about many products, and is reasonably honest about their merits
and demerits even though he may not sell them. He likes solid
state stuff, especially pricey foreign gear. He doesn't like
tubes, even though the best sounding amp in his store is an
ARC 100W monoblock tube piece. Carries more expensive but great
gear. Plays funny games with manufacturers like not giving you the
warrenty card for a month or two so he can take your money and
not pay the manufacturer until the account is due. Shady, but
not illegal. Lives hand to mouth. Has a great looking girl
friend. Cuts great deals if any bills are due. All his gear
is on account and some bill is always due ;-)
3. Audio Gallery. Don't know the owners name. Real nice guy though.
Carries good midfi to excellent high end. Smartly done store.
Has a good mix of solid state and tube gear. Into vinyl, but
has great digital too. Full bore retail only, but this is the
only dealer where you may get your retail dollar's worth.
Cheapskate isn't even in his vocabulary. Located in the posh
Lake Oswego area. Fixated on his $16K Avalons which sound like
shit, which is surprsing given all the other great sounding
stuff in his store.
4. Chelsea Audio(/Video). Ford Montgomery, owner/magnate/boss, employs
lots of professional sales drones at his two stores. Smart savey
businessman. Known nationally and internationally. Appears in
industry mag sidebars. Chelsea religon has been to hate tubes.
They now sell audio note gear though, so my joke about the tubes
in their store being just TVs is shot. Carries Levinson, Watt,
Theil, and other high end pieces. Carries a lot of midfi crap
to sell with their TVs. What used to be a reasonable high end
store is morphed to a audio/video store so Ford can live in the
luxury he must be accustomed to. Basicly, this is a snob outfit
for snobs. If you must go here, see Cliff at the Beaverton store.
Very knowledgable about the high end industry. Has an excellent
ear. Churns high end gear with the best of them. Lots of experience.
Listens to customers well. If he has a fit he sells the piece on
it's merits and application for your needs. If he doesn't have a
fit he will recommend alternatives that he doesn't sell. Cliff
loves tubes. Not afraid to own what he doesn't sell. He's the
best thing Chelsea has going. (Hope my glowing recommendation
doesn't get him fired.) Expect some discount not to exceed 10%.
Some items full boat retail, slow moving closeouts are sacrificed.
Bradfords carries Yamaha, Marantz, NAD, Epos, Vanderstein, Boston
Acoustics, Definitive Technologies, Magnaplanar, Sony, Mitsubishi, Sonic
Frontier, Mark Levinson, Audio Alchamey, Proceed, Adcom, Tara Labs and Kimber
Cable (boy that was a mouthful). They are really great guys and are well
worth the trip to visit them.
