I heard a pair of LX-500's at a local dealer a few weekends ago. I
generally liked them compared to others I've heard in that price
range. (Polk S-8 and S-10, Infinity 525 and 625, and MB Quart Two's)
The dealer said he'd sell me the pair with some cheap stands for $475.
I checked one of the mail-order speaker places and the guy said he
would sell the LX-500's for $440.

Since I heard the other speakers at other stores its hard to give a
real A-B comparison but the LX-500's seemed at least as good as the
others I mentioned.

I prefer to listen to mostly jazz and classical music.

I'm (of course) very interested in what others have to say about these
speakers and others in this price range.

The JBL LX series.
Let's see. I have heard several of the speakers, 300's, 500's and
600's. The 300's I really did not care for, at least in the price
range that I was looking in, they were much less. The sound seemed
lacking, it didn't sound smooth. I have a pair of 500's at the moment,
and I must say that I liked them the best, in their price range.
After 6 months of listening to them, I still think that they were
the best, although for a little more, there are better speakers
available. Classical, jazz, rock, metal, and dance all sound fairly
good through them. I listened to a pair of 600's at the same time,
was impressed, but not enough to pay the extra money for them, at
that time. The sound between the two was very close. Both sound
quite nice. I've seen the 500's for $400 mail order, and the
600's for $600/pr.

I have two "older" pair of JBL LX speakers. One pair of the LX44
and a pair of LX22. I like these speakers very much. I use the 44's
on my main stereo in the family room, and the smaller 22's in
the bedroom. Eventually (when I have enough room) I will use the 22's
as the rear channel speakers for the main stereo.

I prefer the sound of these older speakers to that of the newer models.
(Don't ask me to explain why, but I think they have a bit better
mid's & highs, while the newer ones may have better bass which, to
my ear, probably makes them sound a bit heavy). For me this is fortunate,
since I was able to pick up both pair on "discontinued clearance".
I paid $270 for the 44's (pair) and $180 for the 22's.

I listen mostly to jazz and new age music (with some classical and
pop/rock thrown in), and these speakers do a good job. Certainly,
there are better speakers out there, but for the price I paid, I
don't think I could have gotten a better sound, and I am satisfied.
If you could find a place that still might have some around, I would
suggest you give them a listen and see what you think. You might be
able to good a good deal on them like I did.

Good luck & good listening !!!
