Just fooling around with an AF4 that I purchased in a small lot (oxymoron?)
of gear and I can't figure out what their intention was for the speaker
connectors. They in a small socket with connections for 4, 8, 16, and 32
ohms. The individual holes are very small, smaller that banana plugs. Is
this a standard fitting? I could remove the sockets and put in binding posts
but I'd like to see if I can easily find the correct plug before I start
modifying it. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would
appreciate it.

Incidentally, it doesn't sound half bad within it's power range. I'm sure it
could benefit from new caps, etc but I was pleased with it stock. If nothing
else, it was fun to listen to.

Cheers,

Mark

Can't help you too much with the non-standard speaker plugs, but a pretty good
(almost amazing) sounding amp given it's limitations (small o/p transformers,
low wattage, inexpensive parts, etc.). My favorite thing about it is how Eico
TOUTED it's high amount of feedback (high 20s?).

Gerry,

I agree about the sound. I'm debating on using it to replace the SCA-35 that
I've had on my bench for several years! Do you have any idea about the value
of one in good-excellent condition? Although I doubt it's worth that much, I
don't want to use it as a test amp if it proves to be too collectable. It's
the first one I've ever seen.

How did you work around the speaker connectors?

Thanks,

Mark

Howdy,

I have seen GOOD condition amps with original tubes sell in the
125-175 range (for one that had been gone through by a tech. I have
not heard one, but i am a HUGE fan of the Eico HF-81. They made some
stuff that was unassuming...but great sounding. Best of luck.

Hi Mark:

Michael was correct about the price range in general, $125 - $175, but I'm
pretty sure that I have seen them go for as much as $300+ (classic eBay spike).
Richard on the Eico Yahoo Group, recently wrote about his restoration of one.
Here is the link:

The one that I had, came out of a "bottom-of-the-line" Eico console. :-)

So, it had the appropriate connectors and attached wires and I just spliced on
some standard speaker wire to use it. I actually may have ONE of those
connectors. I recently picked up a Pilot SA-260 amp out of a top-of-the-line
Pilot console and the amp actually uses a similar/identical (?) plug/socket to,
of all things, power the turntable motor!

Gerry,

Thanks for the URL. I'm going to check it out now. Now that you mention it,
I think I have similarly sized sockets
for turntable motors before. Obviously, up until the little AF4 came around,
I never would have paid any attention to them.

Let me know if you find an extra one!

Regards,

Mark
