Fred Nachbaur, my dear friend and one of the greatest contributors to the
vacuum tube hobby and Open Source projects and software, passed peacefully
and painlessly from this earth at 0300 Monday morning, September 27th,
2004 after a very long, hard and bravely fought struggle with cancer.

Fred's accomplishments were many, including the published article "The
Real McTube" appearing in Electronics-Now magazine. Fred's projects page
can be found here: http://dogstar.dantimax.dk/

Fred was a central figure here on RAT where I met him. We exchanged
several tube based ideas and discussions and we quickly formed a mutual
respect for one another as fellow tube enthusiasts, fellow alternative
musicians and most importantly, as fellow humans.

Living in the same province, I fortuneately had the opportunity to meet
him, entertain him and his wife Sharon at my home and exchange several
telephone conversations with him. While primarily being a very private
man, I felt honored that he felt comfortable to share so much with me. We
shared a similar sence of humor, so no meeting was without a bundle of
laughter. Fred and I shared many similar ideas that led to a fabulous
friendship on a physical, mental and even spiritual level.

Fred was also generous. He would never turn a friend down in need of help,
wheather it was simple chit-chat, need of advice or sharing of his
workshop goodies. If you did a trade box of goodies, you were more than
likely to get a box in return stuffed with more goodies than you imagined
in return.

There are very few people in life that when you meet them for the first
time, you feel like you are meeting close family and treat each other
accordingly. Fred was just such a man.

Fred's fondness of animals was also very pronounced, as when he entered my
home, usually all but the "King Tomcat" hides. Our cats came to him like
they knew him and just settled right into his lap.

Fred's battle was fought with great dignity, bravery and perseverence. He
will be missed.

I picked up this message tonight with great sadness. Fred was a
gentleman to all who he touched on this newsgroup. My thoughts are
with his family.

Gregg, thank you for sharing that with us. I didn't know
Fred well personally, but from what little I did know I
concluded that he was definitely in the "good guy"
category. He had a terrific outlook, and seeing his
name on a post was always a pleasure.

My sincerest condolences to his family.

I'm very sad to hear of Fred's passing. On Saturday I was thinking
about him and did a search for his posts. The last one I found was on
8/28 and I hoped then that he was OK. My condolences to his family.

I had no idea... Shock, surprise, regret- all of these and a profound
sense of loss.

Fred was definitely one of the Good Guys. -When my interest in tube
design was recently re-awakened, Fred was (and has since ever been) one of
the people I've relied on for experience and guidance.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, of course.
I sure will miss seeing him here on R.A.T.

I'll make a start on setting things up on a website, Gregg,
would you happen to have a jpeg of Fred I could use?. I can
be emailed at: marc...@dodo.com.au for contributions/prize
donations and suggestions for the competition which will
be similar in scope to Fred's most recent tube poetry
competition.

I have a NOS Rohren Von Weltruf PL519 power pentode, a NOS
GEC 6146B and a pair of NOS E90CC dual triodes to add to the
booty and if anyone else can spare a tube or two, that would
be fantastic.

Maybe we should get up an email
campaign to have the city fathers of Nelson, BC to name a
street or park after the guy..I bet they have no idea
he's likely the most famous person to ever eminate from
the town of Nelson.

Heck, they probably WOULD do that, Nelson appears
to be the rough Canadian equivalent to Bedford Falls.

In honor of Fred, whos favorite tube was and liked to use the nickname of,
I'll throw in a pair of NOS/NIB 807's. I have no tester, so I can't

When I got started a couple of years ago, I now realize that some of my
questions were "campy, banal, etc". They often led to a humorous-off-the
subject-thread, sometimes at my expense (guess I'm a tad sensitive at
times). However, Fred would always take the time out and answer my questions
in an informative, dignified way, never making fun of my inexperience. When
a mistake was made, he knew how to correct it without causing embarrassment.
I immediately fell in love with the man. May the good Lord have mercy on his
soul and give comfort to his family, friends, and colleagues.
Fond Farewell, Fred,

Thanks Gregg, Sander and Tim, I will start work today on The
Fred Nachbaur Tube Poetry competition site. Poems/Haiku/Limericks can
be emailed to: marc...@dodo.com.au . Tim would you be contributing
a single prize with ALL of those tubes or would you be planning to
divide them into smaller lots?.

Hmm... one set of eight tubes, your choice of AU, AX or DJ. I'm not partial
to brand but if it matters I can dig around and see if I have any preferred
brands (please specify as well). (No TFK's.)

Ok fellow RATS, Fred's tube poetry competition is now located at:

and vote for your choice via email by clicking on the "Vote" link.

Would any prize contributors be able to email me with a photo of
their prizes if they have one available and I will post it to the
site. As you can see Steve bench has submitted the first entry.

Hi Mark,

As a price I could submit a DVD packed with
circuits (sorted) and tube data and articles
(Crowhurst, Glass Audio, whatelse) and RDH4
in .pdf format I collected over the years from
the 'Net.

Also included some web site mirrors (which run
offline from the DVD) I made of tube tech
related sites I found interesting, including
Freds site www.dogstar.dantimax.dk, of course.

The offered price inludes shipping worldwide.

Sad to tell this,

but almost immediately after having posted the article
offering the said DVD as a price I got emailed by a
RAT writing about copyright infringements when dumping
his site (copying it) to DVD.

Hey boys, get real, this is one of a kind single copy
DVD, not for sale, just a no profit give-away as a price
in a contest in memoriam someone our community lost
recently.

If you don't agree to this, you shouldn't have made
your circuits and thoughts available on the 'net in
the first place.

Since mud-throwing would be the last thing Fred would
have wished, I retract my price offer.

Instead, I will browse through my tube drawers to find
something else.

Fred taught me alot over the years,I learned alot by reading his posts
here, and chatting with him via email.I felt bad for pestering him so
much at times, but some of his explainations were fabulous! The kinda guy
I (or anyone) could relate with.. It's such a shame, such a good guy is
gone, along with all of his great knowledge. I'll miss him,and his crazy
ideas and projects for sure.

I'll second that. He was definitely unique.

like always- in funny contests and polls along with
Fffffffffrrrrreeeeeeedddddddd and other funny Rodents,I will send my piece
of poetry ;
but-this time,in Frrrrrrreeeedddds memory , I'll send writing in my own
language, without my contribution in Prize item , and also without
requesting the prize.
I already have Fred's own offline version of his site ( one of many ;) ,his
own music ,AM Pirate collection of music and that is enough material items
for me.
let competition begin ........

I've been off the ng for a bit, and was saddened by this news.

Fred seemed a gentle soul, and was a fountain of both knowledge and
diplomacy.
His contributions were always enjoyable and useful.
He will truly be missed.
God bless.

Just grab that plate in one hand, the chassis in the other,
and FEEL the power of tube audio!!!
(not literally, of course, just kidding. DON'T DO THAT!)
