hello all..just picked up(for free of course)about 200- 6211's...100-
5963's..(few different plate style rca's and a totally different plate
ge's)....seems the 5963 is a cross to a 12AU7 and the 6211's cross to a
12AT7..does anyone know if these are the correct subs?..any other
comments?...thanks in advance

5963- computer rated 12AU7. Not really intended for use in audio circuits, so
expect problems with noise, microphonics, an plate current balance between the
triodes.

6211- computer rated variation of 5844 (which in turn is more related to a
6J6). Same caveats apply to this computer tube.

Good luck

The 5963 is ESSENTIALLY a 12AU7, but my data books all state the Max Plate
Voltage as 250 V, and this is stated as an ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM, not a "design
maximum". So, as long as Eb doesn't exceed 250V, you can use it as a 12AU7.

This is tube is VERY common. Antique Electronic Supply is selling these on
clearance for $3 each.

I have a couple hundred of these myself, so I have some experience using them
in audio. Different brands and different plate structures are better than
others. The RCA's with large black plates sound SUPERB (the grey plates are
good, too). The Nationals with the dinky "GE" style plate are nothing
exciting, but still pass audio just fine.

They're nothing like Telefunken 12AU7's, but since you got them for FREE, I'd
say you still SCORED!

FWIW, I just bought some of the sale 5963 from AES. They were all Westinghouse.
All but 1 looked like a typical tall ribbed plate U.S. 12AU7. One of them,
though, has a plate structure I haven't seen before. The plates are tall and have
substantial flanges that are (I think I remember) stapled, but the important part
where the heater/cathode/grid lives is shaped like a small, tall, (vertical)
square box. Weird looking. That one and the others sound most excellent as a
voltage amp in guitar amp and in a hi-fi amp. Seem to me to have a bit better
bass than the EI 12AU7As that I was using.

Hello Robert

I tried 6211 for audio, I think that there's no direct substitution.  These tubes are terribly microphonic.

Dear m...@ncx.com,

I have some by Raytheon, IBM (labelled), and Sylvania Gold...I find them to
be super in just about any application from Heathkit, Eico to Mesa
Tigris...I've not had any problems with noise or microphonics.

They seem to sub well for 12AU7's.

I've even lowered gain by replacing 12AX7's...nice and cheap.

Cheers,

MHO
